Thought a draw was the fairest result on the night, but like Gary Neville said, Chelsea for an away side in Europe played really well. David Luiz definitely the MOTM for me. As for Benfica, Jardel and Emerson looked really vulnerable and not surprisingly were exposed in the end by Chelsea. A massive couple of weeks ahead of Benfica - hosting Braga and travelling to Lisbon in the league, and of course the return leg at the Bridge in the Champions League.

Just noticed how tight it is at the top of the Portuguese league. Oh well, I guess we're gonna do Benfica a favour by knocking them out so they can concentrate on their title challenge :D

I hope Barca knock you out in the 93rd minute again and Drogba kills the ref. I hope this ref is Ovrebo.
I hope you have a heart attack and die

Outplayed by 10 men at home, what a bloody mess. Blind luck Benfica didn't score a few more, Jesus knows they had the chances.

We bring this sort of performance against Barca we'd be pulverized.
Sort of a coincidence that we started looking nervy when JT was subbed.

Maybe I was a bit too harsh on saying that were outplayed completely, but we were poor from 70min mark against 10 men. Benfica really controlled things and showed intent but didn't create any clear cut chance apart from Oliveira's at 1-1. The defending on the Javi Garcia goal was horrific.

Torres and Mata both had good chances to score, and Ramires missed that sitter, if that would've gone in there would be no crap about us not deserving to go through. Which is what the media is focusing on strangely enough.

You also had to consider that most of the players were knackered, and we've got a more tight schedule to follow with the FA Cup semis, 4th place and this.

Well, we had our 4 CB's injured, played with a LB and a DM on that position, Maxi Pereira's red card was a joke and the other yellow cards too, it was an incredible homie referee there and im not whining just because, thats what all the press says in Portugal and outside of it. We with 10 men looked so much superior, nothing against Chelsea but thats it.

In the first leg it was a clearly penalty on John Terry's handball his arm wasnt in a natural position, wasnt even behind his back, he was just with his arms open.

But oh well, we lost, kind of frustated because we did better both games, and looked like we wanted this more than you guys, at least in field perfomance.

What was Maxi's first yellow?

Because the second is more than deserved. And there's people complaining about the penalty? Please. Terry in the first leg sure, but how is Garcia/Cole NOT a penalty?

Javi's penalty is penalty for me. The second yellow was deserved on maxi. The first one was in the penalty but he didnt anything he just went to talk with the referee as the captain and he just gave yellows to everyone who talked to him on that moment.

YELLOW CARD - Sarcasm
It's a difficult one because nobody knows what was said. Obviously the referee is fully inclined to dish out a yellow card if he feels the dissent was strong enough. I will say the Referee did seem a bit card happy on the night both ways.

Overall I think Chelsea did deserve to go through, watching Benfica in the first 20 minutes was like watching a team that had lost it's head with little to no leadership to steady the ship. Yes from 70 minutes onward Benfica were in the ascendancy but a 30 minute performance will rarely win you game, especially in the CL Quarter Final; plus I think this was more down the Chelsea taking their foot off the gas; thinking they'd already won the game and tie.

Yup, I thought the team was damn too complacent particularly after JT went off. Backed away too much from challenges and allowed Aimar and Djalou space to roam forward.

The amount of times Kalou got free on the left, for most part he did nothing with it. Can't deny he gets into good positions but he really is frustrating to watch on the ball. I was literally screaming for Sturridge to come on, selfish but at least he does possess skill and conviction to go forward.

In the end, we can't deny that Benfica played better possession football, but that's not what wins you games, goals do.

We played poorly BUT we were always going to be complacent going into that match, I dont expect we will play that badly against Barcelona.

JT has been playing with cracked ribs for the last two games, that's why he came off. He's been a different man recently, become very important again, but may be out for a few weeks now.

Still not convinced Kalou deserves to have regained his place as a regular.

But yeah, anyone who was saying "why would anyone join chelsea" and "why did Mata move abroad to join a club struggling to make top four" etc etc has got their answer..... Mata, Cahill, Meireles etc in their first season at Chelsea and already getting to play in a CL semi final against Barcelona....... we're still a great club.
