The Von Trapps
relatively speaking, I guess that's true ... when I started watching football, PSV were the team of Kalusha, of Romário, and then of Ronaldo; I didn't identify them with a style -- unlike with van Gaal's Ajax or Cruyff's Barça ... that notion stayed through the Luc Nilis, Jaap Stam, Mark van Bommel years, after which I've barely watched the Dutch league ...

thinking about it, most of PSV's success has been with Hiddink, in 2 different eras ... how would you peg his style? coz that's basically PSV's "identity" ...

I personally saw more of Guus' tactics during EURO '96 and especially France '98, which I'd categorize as more pragmatic than the typical philosopher coaches from the Ajax school ... Cocu was the perfect balance between the Ajacieds and the rest in that '98 team, so I see where you're coming from ... but it's not a given that his style would carry from being a player to being a manager ...

I'd also say Hiddink is a pragmatist, which means that he'll play ugly, tough football if it is necessary.

I've read a bit about Cocu being a very able tactician. I don't know for sure that he'd also instill a competitive edge in his teams, but he really does seem like that kind of personality. I don't know how you could be that kind of player and not look to bring it out of the players you manage. I couldn't stand to coach players that don't want to win as much as I do.

I think you're a lot closer to describing Frank de Boer. His Ajax teams were pretty mediocre, but De Boer still knew how to win four consecutive titles by instilling his work ethic and winner mentality. I also think his teams are a lot more pragmatic than Ajax is usually associated with, it really hasn't been that nice to watch, but it's effective.

Cocu is too soon to tell for me. This season he's playing an effective counter attacking style with PSV because it suits his players, but during his first year he was pretty heavily criticized for making too many rookie mistakes. The results are starting to show though, so he could very well develop into a good manager. Another thing is that Cocu is an incredibly boring guy in the media, he doesn't have high charisma. This is in contrast with Frank de Boer who seems like a born manager, he's a much more interesting guy to listen to, which to me makes him a more interesting candidate for an elite club like Bayern or Barca.

"Bravo Franck, that is football!"
"YEESS Badstuber, I LOVE YOU!" (H)

"I mean, I'd love you more if you weren't injured 95% of the season, but I love you!"

I'm watching a replay now, it's 77th and 4-1. Really happy for Wolfsburg but I dunno how indicative this is. They clearly prepared the shit out of this match and Bayern looked complacent.

Dante hasn't been the guy he was when he first came but why are you calling him a joke? Unless it's something that happens in the next 10 minutes I don't see a reason for it. Care to elaborate?

Those goals were based on counter attacks ... I don't think Dante was responsible for this defeat ...

Shifty, thoughts on "Herr Pep" book?

I'm thinking of ordering it, but decided to ask an ex Pep hater who became his fan first. :D

Just like in SG, he stands around for a long time criticising everyone and makes people think he's an authority figure.

What's your role in the military? The cook?

Close. But actually I do this

I really liked the Herr Pep/Pep Confidential book. Thought it was excellent and turned me from a skeptic into a full fledged Pep believer.

Looks like I might get a chance to watch Bayern-Schalke tonight.
