And the first games with Fernandez weren't very impressive, and then...

Great logic, man!

Was a bit disappointed with the way we played. In all the previous matches, even those we lost, we played great offensive football but that wasn't the case yesterday; Estrela even controlled the ball in most of the 1st half...
We still need our midfield either to make runs - and they are all static for most of the game (don't know if you could see that on tv) - or to come back and pick up the ball and make plays. For the most part, none of that happened: Diego glued himself to Postiga's back and Lucho and Raul were easily marked. Bottom line: good old Pedro Emanuel doing his long balls, just like last year. :nape:
But hopefully those were just old vices that Co will turn around pretty soon.

About the players individually:

Defence
+ Sonkaya's offball moves were pretty poor, getting easily beat by Estrela's wingers due to bad positioning. Hopefully he'll learn quickly how and where to move. Still, a couple decent crosses and a lot of will to do well gave me some faith in this guy.
+ The other defenders were okay for the most part. Cesar is really helpful on the attack and will be a good, smart, quick defender by midseason.

Midfield
+ Raul wasn't as good as in the preseason, mostly bcs he didn't search the ball on attack, rather keeping himself to defensive roles. His injury might be the open window Ibson needs to get a spot in the first 11.
+ Lucho was above average, I thought. He suffered hard foul after hard foul but kept his composure and always came up with the dangerous pass. He's like Diego's antithesis: only needs a couple touches to make something happen.
+ Diego improved a lot in the second half, but needs to drop his 'carteiro' antics, or Co will bench him.

Attack
+ Lisandro and Jorginho were great, always finding space to deliver dangerous crosses, which unfortunately didn't turn out in goals because...
+ ... Postiga was easily delt by Estrela's CB. I was not annoyed by him missing easy chances, but because he didn't work hard: no runs, just camping outside Estrela's box; always getting beat to the ball. Hugo Almeida won more balls in 10 minutes than him. I bet he'll be benched against Naval...

Oh, and check my pic in the Liga thread. :)

For those interested about this subject and do not understand portuguese, I'll briefly translate it:

Porto and the Portuguese Football Federation seem to have agreed about Nuno Valente playing only on the 2 official matches of the NT (vs Liechtenstein and Latvia, in October) before the WC, and then he'll be called again to go to Germany in case Portugal qualifies, and, of course, if Scolari choses him to be part of the squad.

I really hope there's an agreement about this issue, Nuno Valente would be an important addition to our first eleven, even though Peixoto is doing quite well as a LB.

On another note, West Ham are reported to be trying to get Benni.
Don't care how much they offer, I just don't want him to go and fortunately Co seems to want him to stay too...

Alright lads, just thought I'd stick my head round the door and tell you Joao Cascas scored his first competitive goals tonight - he got 2 against 3rd Division Queen's Park at Hampden tonight. Hopefully we're there more times this season! :p

João Cascas showing what he's made of. He'll become Hearts' best all-time scorer and rise to team captain in no time (H)

Please m8, keep us informed about the legend!

George Burley said: "I was pleased for Edgar, he hasn't been on the score sheet this season, despite the number of goals we have scored. Strikers need to score goals for confidence and he has a big smile on his face tonight."

To be fair, the reports I have heard is that he worked very hard tonight, and should perhaps have had more, but hey, it's good that he's scored for us.

At Porto, he was like a super-sub.
Mourinho didn't play him very often, but almost every time he got in a match, he's helped us by scoring important goals.
There was one time when Mourinho gave him a spot on the first team away against Braga, and he simply scored an hattrick in basically 3 goal chances he had...I was thrilled with that, and you could see that so was Jan, every Porto player, Mourinho, and for sure all of the Porto followers.
You can understand by that that he's always been seen as a really nice fellow here in Portugal, and a useful striker whenever a team needed him.

So, it's a good thing Burley and the supporters are being patient with him. One can't expect many technical skills from the guy, but I'm sure he'll help Hearts out with some goals :)

You will HATE Rangers in the coming weeks. :)

Hope not, that will mean we lost... about the draw i think it was good for us, we have to start with a victory in the first game if we want a good campaign and not leave the qualification to the last game like last year... Inter playing home in an empty stadium will be an advantage for the other teams, let's see what happens. I believe we can finish first in the group but most important is to qualify.

I thought they loved us. :)
But I believe they'll have to fight with Inter for 2nd place. Yeah, that's right, we got a lucky draw and have all the conditions to finish first. In fact, I'll be disappointed if we don't at least avenge last season's CL failure against Inter (I'll get Mikey this time).
