Porta, an incredible team, they sell their main starts every year and still they are champions.

haha, Farías (H)

It's one of those players I just love to love. (H) I was the same way with Hulk when he started and everyone hated him because he never passed the ball and stuff; so I'm hoping my faith will make Farías a better player too (H)

It's a long story that started in the early 80's; if you knew all the details you wouldn't be so impressed...

It involves corruption, traffic of influences (especially with the referee's board of direction), bribery, blackmail, paying referees trips to Brazil, etc, etc.

That's how they got the dominance of portuguese football in the 80's and early 90's, so from then on they got more money to make better teams, win the league, go to the Champions League, make more money, make better teams, just like a cycle... So obviosly, it's easier for them to win clean, nowadays.

It's like a mafia and their president is always making offers others can't refuse (have you seen the Godfather movie?).

I'm not saying that they are not the best team in Portugal, and also the more well organized club, now and in the last years, because they are, but all started in a dirty way.

Proof? you got any....dont think so

Over and over Benfica and Sporting (lately not sporting) big wigs have tried to use this excuse, make **** up, bribe ppl (Carolina) to lie and so on. We go to courts, there is no proof, just stories that "this person and that person overheard or that person saw this. NO ACTUAL PROOF

Until there is proof we are innocen until proven guilty. 25 years and nothing has come out of various legal proceedings. Not even Benfiquista prosecutors and Judges who would want nothing but to destroy Porto could find even the smallest thing to convict us on.

Supposedly, the proof lied in Games two games where we lost and tied and records show we were actually screwed by the ref...better luck next time

Everytime I read or listen to this , I think 3 things:

- where is smoke there's fire
- it's better to let go a guilty person than to condemn an innocent
- the only accusation the police was able to proove against Al Capone was tax evasion.

Agora tambem não vale a pena discutir isso quer tenha sido verdade ou não. Temos (Benfica) é de os vencer e o resto é conversa.

Falcão vai poder jogar na 1ª jornada? Sinceramente gosto mais do Farias..

Actually no, because you talked and look what came out.

If your team can't win then don't come here and say it was because almost 30 years ago you THINK someone didn't play by the rules. If you're frustrated it's not our fault...

English plz ... it just became interesting.

I had no idea about those things, but I have one question. One guy claimed that there is no proof for those claims, I'm curious to know how powerful Porto management and their supporters are. If they are as powerful as Real's Franco, It makes sense that there is no proof.

by the way, how's Mafia power in portugal?

This is old news, everybody knows it. Even them, oh the situations over the years, not even the most skeptic Porto fan can believe it was coincidence.

And FYI Paulo, FC Porto was convicted. They (the club) declared themselves guilty of "attempt of corruption". Only that because the tapes the police has weren't considered as a formal evidence, not because they aren't true, and by the way, Pinto da Costa never said they were fake, he just said they couldn't be used because to make them you'll (even the police) need proper authorization of a judge etc. some bureaucratic process.

As a result, FC Porto got a deduction of 6 points two or so seasons ago. Yes, only that. It's a shame, but that was the regulation. What kind of innocent admits they are guilty if they're not? If he was so sure he was innocent he would of defended the club's honor and never declared guilty of such offenses.

There's isn't much "mafia" as in Italy or other countries, it's not so evident, but lots of things still happen ultimately because justice doesn't work. The courts take forever to resolve the simplest of issues. For instance, say a company has some debt to pay to other company, and yet they refuse to do so. So, if you threaten to take it to court they'll say go ahead, because it will take years. Eventually, the company or individual that refuses to pay will be considered guilty, like many years after which is useless, or the process may even by archived, because so much time has passed.

And this happens because people who make the laws have interests in the big lawyers offices, and so they intentionally leave say "holes" on them, so they can exploit when needed.

So football is just a reflex of society, but admittedly it has huge influence at least here, politics is mixed with football, with very shady areas. No government has yet actually done something serious about it (corruption in football), the "Apito Dourado" the process in which FC Porto and Boavista FC were charged with these accusations was a joke. Even when it began, someone from the Porto police called Pinto da Costa, telling him to leave because they were going to search his house and interrogate him. You could immediately tell the outcome...

oJogo claims the certificate is already in the FPF so he should be available for Sunday although I don't think Falcao will start anyway...Farías is a matador, people shouldn't expect him to do fancy stuff with the ball except putting it in the bottom of the net which he does. One goal for every 101 minutes of play: that's his (pretty good) average so far :browsmiley:

Now, I'm interested to watch some Portuguese matches.

If you're interested because of this kind of things, nowadays you won't see anything. You'll see referee's failing in the 3 top Portugal clubs, so...
