Pro Evolution Soccer 3:
To parapharse Alan Green "Pro Evolution Soccer was the game that put Konami's ship back ont he road." Until this series debuted on the PS2 back in 2001, Konami was always playing catch-up to EA's FIFA seies. But despite still not having a licensed game, the Pro Evolution series stole the football crown and has dominated the charts ever since. Gamers wonderd whether the Japanese coders in Tokyou could perfectwhat was considerd perfection. Well the managed it, with the enhanced Pro Evolution Soccer 2. So now we wonder again, can the best et even better? Damn right it can. After a couple of days with Pro Evolution Soceer 3 we can honestly say thisis the greatest football game to grace any console. Surprisingly, there are a lot of changes under what seem a familiar hood. Unlike Pro Evoluion Soccer 2, this third edition to the series has been completely revamped. In fact nearly 80% of the game in new! To achive this Konami has dispensed with RenderWare - a system of pre-made graphics tools that offer quick development times, but offer quick development time, but timited visual results - in order to build the game's look from scratch. This has resulted in eight times the number of animation and more detailed stadiums, allowing for such things as variable weather conditions, as matches are played. Games might now start dry, only for it to be raining in the second half. Of course, being Pro Evo, the weather effects aren't just cosmetic; you will need to change your style of play to accommodate the changing weather in order to avoid inuries. The results of this labour is a game that is faster, better looking and as sweetly animated as you could pssibly hope for. The matches run at a quicker pace than previous games in the series - Konami has specifically engineered play around swift one-touch passing; making build up play more crucial than ever before. More than any toher console football game, this is dynamic end-to-end stuff... but form side-to-side. More so, the stadiums are now bigger and more detailed than in past games. The supporters in the stands now wear different clothes depending ont he weather. More importantly, the better you play the busier the terraces and vice versa; play a poor game and they will empty. Also, rather than the three or four animation routines of Pro Evo 2, players will now take the ball in a variety of different ways, depending on their skill level, speed and positon in relation to other players. In one move, Kleberson recived a long pass from Roberto Carlos with the outside of his heel, thenin a flash of inspierd style, flicked the ball over a straggling defender's head. In no time at all, after booting up Pro Evo 3, old fans will be breathing down the heels of the opposition. Spectacular goalus will now be a little easier to come by than before, mainly due to the enhanced AI. Whereas in Pro Evo 2 players would head balls from outside the box, they now attempt swinging volleys and strikes, jsut like their real life counterparts. After a swift play as Brazil, we can safely say the series' new hero is Ronaldinho, who appers to be able to swing his jammy right foot at everything and hit the mark. The lucky Brazilian never fails to strike the target, even when he misss. It's not all aobut the foeign talent, though. Us English fans, and the couple of Toffees out there, also have something to crow about with the inclusion of Wayne Rooney. In fact, with the Master Leauge now split up into four leagues, the number of players has now been quadrupaled since Pro Evo 2. And they all now come with their very own revised ratings and attributes, star qualities and personalities. With so many players iont eh game you'd think the Master Leauge would become a nightmare of menus. And it would have been if Konami hadn't added a new player sherch section. Simply type in your requirements and then the game will search its database of Championship Manager rated players, in order to find a relevant match. Back on the pitch, and many players now feature specialised animations. Just as Beckham's free-kick style was imiteted in Pro Evo 2, we now get Thierry Henry's gangling run perfectly recreated; run at the opposition and he explodes like the French train that he is.

I was blinded once thinking for a moment FIFA 2004 might just beat PES3, but then EA just had time constraints, took out a great feature and will probably have a game, which isn't as realistic as PES3 anyway!

fifa beat pes?? who cares if it beats them or not.. just play whatever game you enjoy.. if you play the demo for fifa and you enjoy it then buy the game. if you dont like it then dont buy it.. but I think people pay too much attention to what previewers say.. since most of it is just personal opinion anyway.. and personal bias always comes to play...

You can't have a personal opinion on factual features in the game, only if the writer says it's a good or bad feature.

Dynamic weather will be in PES3 and I know how great the ball physics are in that game and player attributes. That's all FIFA needs. Features like this are brilliant for football games.

So while FIFA 2004 is being played without a drop of rain, they'll be intense matches against rival teams, where the match starts to rain and players' have to be careful in PES3. I know this for sure! I don't know why people can settle for a nice day with a different coloured sky, if FIFA didn't have licensing it'd be a different story.

I don't know why you think PES is over rated; every year it makes FIFA look daft.

For me, I have to buy the best football game available to play and available to me. This year I have a CHOICE, so if PES3 has better gameplay, then what's the point in buying FIFA? To cheer me up with no rainy days? WTF?!?!?

But why buy FIFA if PES3 has the better gameplay experience? Surely you don't care about playing on-line if the gameplay isn't any good? That's just a waste of cash man in my opinion.

You're such a ****ing prima-donna it's not funny. I have a lot of respect for your integrity, but lately your new found attitude has been pissing me off left, right, up and down. Have you played FIFA 2004? No. How are you to compare it to PES3 already? Christ, every day we get closer to the release pricks like you go on these little panic rants, is it contagious or something?:kader:

Ok, someone has gotta cut the yo-yo string, cause every year we get hyped up about FIFA and then pissed off when we play it.

Every year someone says "look at PES, it's awesome" and most of us agree.

Then the year after, most peeps here will say the same rubbish and say "FIFA is going to be great, I don’t care about PES" but then we get pissed off again.

WHY NOT THIS YEAR? Just because EA have done a different approach to advertising the product, is it really a better game, or just clever marketing?

I want to buy a football game I'm sure of.

Yeah sure the previews say FIFA is better this year, but DUH! Isn't that the same every year? :kader:

And isn’t it every year we play the demo, bless EA, buy the game, find a load of bugs, master the game quick and do the same crap over and over and over?

I just don’t want to waste my money guys, sorry if I annoyed you all, but I don’t want to go out and buy a game I’m not sure of… :(

It's the honest truth. You act like you weren't caught in FIFA 2004 Mania yourself? WHICH you know god damn well you were. Why you'd insult yourself is weird, but it's mean as well, so why should I have any mercy for the truth I put out?

I never did get caught in the fifa mania; I never said FIFA 2004 is going to be great. Yeah sure I hunted down some video footage, I want to know what the game is going to be like, I am a FIFA player, it'd be ridiculous to say that because I play FIFA and want to watch some videos makes me in the "FIFA mania", maybe in my younger years, but I haven't lost my head this year and said FIFA 2004 will be brilliant, the best fifa ever, blah blah blah.

So I'm not contradicting myself as more cleverly put it, but I am simply trying to not waste my money like I do every year. :(

All I’ve just done is took my yo-yo and cut the string mate. :rockman: I won’t be buying FIFA from playing the demo, not this year, I’m going to have to rent the game too.

Though I probably won't buy it if PES3 has better gameplay, because this year it's not about licensing and graphics for me, or on-line play, it's about everything that goes with gameplay, and yes that means dynamic weather...

sometimes it's the small things that count. ;)

Agreed, Nick. You finally seem able to shake yourself away from the hype EA generates before releasing their HUMUNGOUS crap-fest. Don't know if you can recall, but i was here back in the 2001 days with a diff nick I can't even remember. The same **** has happened every year now, with EA puncturing our hearts by releasing CRAP like 2000, 2001, 2002 and WC2002. So to all those who are already caught up in the hype, excuse Nick cos he's just an idiot who does not know what he's doing

So you agree with me, yet I’m an idiot?

FIFA 2004 might be a great game, but why? Every other year it’s being a disgrace.

PES has being successful every year with great gameplay and sales, so why is it that when I think PES3 will have better gameplay then FIFA 2004, I get flamed and told I haven’t played either game, when it’s just the fact that it’s my opinion.

I used to love waiting for the next FIFA, I always believed the hype and backed up EA and said how they’re doing a great job. That’s called being in the FIFA Mania. All I’ve done is gave a sensible opinion on the media and yes, I have wanted to watch the media a lot so that I can make sure I spend my money on a game worth the cash.

But then something snapped last night and I kind of thought: “What’s the point”? I thought to myself if PES3 is available on PC and has a much greater chance of having better gameplay, then why buy FIFA 2004? Sure I’m going to play both through either a demo, or a pod in a games shop, but I ain’t just buying FIFA like some of you here, just because you’ve bought every single previous title. Why buy FIFA if you KNOW there’s a good chance a better game will be available for the same price? Sure you can buy both, but for me I wouldn’t play the game that didn’t play as well, because it wouldn’t be as exciting or realistic and I'd only want to play the game that gave the best experience on the pitch.

I don’t know about you, but I think what I just said wouldn’t come from the mind of an idiot. ;)

Nick.
