-----------------------------------------------------

The 3rd place teams will compete for the final spot in a series of single elimination playoffs. The Netherlands Antillies has a bye to the Semi-final of those playoffs having been the best of the 7 "3rds" I haven't done the draw just yet.

Anyway I think it worked out really well, there are some upsets in there (as you should and will always see.

I'm most surprised to see Suriname finish third in Group A, Jamaica struggled but still won their group (5 draws? ) Montserrat showed up... Saint-Martin is the only unaffiliate that is completely eliminated at this point.

I'm quite happy with the new gameplay setup and I think it translated well for the caribbean nations. however I think i'm going to make some adjustments and increase the skill of jamaica, cuba, haiti, and maybe T&T (they havent played yet i dunno) so that the region is a little stronger in competition and the caribbean giants really stand out. like I said Jamaica had a really tough time of it so far.

I want to thank you again August for the suggestions you made which helped me make the game much much more believeable.

btw the preliminary scores were

Montserrat 1-1 USVI
USVI 1-4 Montserrat

Thanks again August.

I see it's all quite realistic, apart from Montserrat being the breakthrough of your competition. Thanks for listing all this. I'm thinking of actually playing one tournament your style, playing every match with every team.

It's a good sign you get as different results as 4-4, 5-0 and 0-0. Your gameplay can't be that wrong.

theworm, sorry for answering so late, i've been offline during the holidays. i don't really know what that is, though i'm using my bike almost every day :)

It's probably worth it to give it a shot playing my way but i dont think it's for everyone.

I hate getting scored on and I really hate going an entire half without scoring... without that whoever you want to win ends up winning for the most part. But i always have a drive to go forward and attack even if i'm playing the U.S.

The other draw back is that 1 tournament can take a long time. It's difficult to finish one which is why I set mine up to continue to roll over on a 12 month calander 4 year cycle. At the moment the international calander is quite empty, just caribbean cup, UNCAF nations cup and Euro qualifying. Starting in april and may (i'm in march '07 atm) there will probably be 100+ games to play in a month... i expect it to take me a year or maybe longer to actually make it to the 2010 world cup. The idea kind of intrigues me as well since i'll be watching the real tournaments unfold in a similar timeline (obviously theirs will take longer but, at least i won't be in the 2022 world cup when we start qualifying.

those are just my warnings about what you may or may not like about it all.

Biebrich 02

Senior Squad
i'm aware of that and i think it increases the suspense, if that's the way to say it in english. to know that it will be one year and hundreds of matches which you will all take part of, til you reach the world cup final after playing hundreds of qualification matches and friendlies... who will win this world cup? you won't know until 2008. that sounds good. i started to play asian qualification (started in 2nd stage, the first group stage). Tough group for Korea, they will face Doha winner Qatar, apart from India and Kyrgyzstan. 3rd stage will be different from 2006 since bahrain and north korea are both in group c, while group g contains no participant of 2006's third stage (china, oman, vietnam, singapore).
if it's fun, and i guess it is :) i'll play the other confederations too, and then world cup.

i hope it works out for ya... if you get a chance show me the breakdown of your groups... i'de like to see your setup.

Looks like it's going really well so far.

Euro 2008 Qualifying is the tournament I was playing while testing my database... so there are a lot of F'ed up results. I'll just tell ya what the groups look like now... most teams have about 5 games left... group A has 4 games left each.

Spain 14
Norway 12
Belgium 8
Denmark 6
Lithuania 4
Azerbaijan 3

Ireland 11
Czech Rep. 10
Romania 8
Belarus 7
Georgia 3
Cyprus 3

Moldova 1
Estonia 4
North. Ireland 7
Bulgaria 9
Croatia 10
Italy 12

France 15
Scotland 9
Turkey 7
Hungary 5
Liechtenstein 4
Montenegro 4

Germany 12
Sweden 8
Kazakhstan 7
Iceland 7
Finland 4
Israel 4

Portugal 11
FYR Macedonia 9
Poland 8
Greece 7
San Marino 4
Slovenia 1

Serbia 10
England 10
Russia 8
Albania 5
Malta 4
Bosnia-Herzegovina 4

Netherlands 12
Ukraine 10
Slovakia 10
Latvia 5
Wales 3
Armenia 2

As you can see there are a few teams doing a little better or worse than maybe they should be. San Marino won a preliminary tournament knocking out Faroe Islands, Andorra, Luxembourg. The winners from each group here will qualify directly. The seconds play a series of single leg playoffs.

8 teams in the first round, the 4 winners qualify.

The 4 loosers are paired up and the two winners here will qualify to make 16 including Austria, Switzerland as hosts.

I don't know if you are interested at all August (probably not only i'm this crazy!) but... I'm trying to create a decent rankings system that can certainly be viewed as more reliable than FIFA's (T&T is worse than St. V&G huh?... interesting) and can be considered a viable alternative to the ELO rankings (i still don't agree with their system entirely but it's not too bad.

Anyway, i've just completed the first stage of the revised rankings system which is just to get a calculation down for each parameter and make sure that the calculations don't yield any errors. The next step is testing it all. I'm going to be using my games to filter through the system and see how the results turn out I was curious if you would be interested in using it and possibly providing some feedback (cause I haven't asked for enough of you just yet ;) ) ... anyway if you would be interested in trying it out, or even just looking over what i've done i'de appreciate it... if it's not your cup of tea don't feel bad saying no... I am completely understanding that most people don't give a damn about rankings and would rather just play the game, but i like the idea behind them and I think given enough attention a good rankings system is possible for the international football community.

Lemmie know if you're interested... i'm still trying to find a programmer that can put it into a more user friendly format but am having no luck just yet.

Biebrich 02

I don't know if i have understood it entirely... you are making a ranking that will be a trustworthy model for player stats?

For the teams i have created so far, and also the ones in the game which add it up to (about) 190 national teams, i just created player abilities that seemed right to me, the fifa ranking wasn't what i used mostly, instead i used results of the last years since i have some kind of a good memory for results :)

but if i understand you correctly, you are looking for a better ranking that is similar to the fifa ranking but better and more reliable, aren't you?

the fifa ranking is not really showing the true abilities of each team, that's absolutely right, though i don't think the system it is created is so wrong. maybe it could be improved here or there but it will always have wrong-ranked teams because some teams can hardly be judged. st vincent has never played against england and sweden, not even paraguay. trinidad has. the ofc teams never play against teams that are not ofc members, how can you compare them with caribbean teams that only play against themselves and weaker asian and african teams that do the same. even stronger teams like honduras, bolivia, guinea or uzbekistan almost never play against teams from other continents.

and, uh, back to using that ranking system for my fifa, how could i test it? and what would the programmer do? creating a tool that creates player stats from that ranking?

Biebrich 02

thanks for posting your euro standings. to make sure that san marino can't beat slovenia any more you should put their values as low as possible. no more star players. they have none, believe me (or watch the highlights of the match against germany at www.uefa.com :) )

mrliioadin

Senior Squad
I dont have any star players on any teams any longer actually.

My player rankings are set. The rankings system i created is one that will actually rank and compare the teams.

I believe if you look at what is actually important when two teams play each other you can come up with a rankings system that will be acurate enough to be used for seeding teams for tournaments and helping with draws etc.

My rankings system is one that uses a different set of parameters than FIFAs and ELOs that i feel deals a little better at actually punishing a team for playing weaker opponents and achieving poor results (such as barely beating much weaker than them), and rewards weaker teams that play well against a giant or a nation much much stronger. Teams can regularly earn a few points by playing tough opponents and loosing... hopefully not enough to propell them through the rankings but enough to show that Montserrat playing to a 2-1 loss against guyana is a pretty good showing and deserves a reward.

anyway it all needs to be tested by imputing results and comparing how many points teams are earning and how much they are moving up or down in the rankings. eventually i plan to use this modle to rank the actually national teams.

the programmer would be helping me to put it into a more user friendly interface. At the moment it is difficult to keep track of the rankings becuase you have to physically input the teams, score, and starting points for both teams, and the importance of the match. they are then run through several calculations which yield an eventual new ranking for both teams.

The hard part is you have to look up the teams starting points to begin with and look them up and change them manually after the rankings change which can get difficult and it's easy to typo a 121.9 for a 129.1.. which can make a difference.

:s***: !!!!

mother:s***:

I just played Cyprus vs Romania with a final result of 5-2 cyprus... I'm comming to realize i need a different Gameplay for each confederation.... as well as a seperate one for intercontinental matches and the world cup.

All i did was keep the same Gameplay settings and modified THESE:

// ranges for attributes
ATTRIBUTE_AVG = 65
ATTRIBUTE_GOOD = 75
ATTRIBUTE_EX = 83

so that the excellent teams in the OFC for example are teams with attributes 51+(ish)

i set the CONMEBOL and UEFA ranges up so that excellent teams are near 90+... good is like 81+ ... average is 75+ ...

I'm posting this cause I think it will help create a gap between teams of the same confederation a little more realistically... What i'm going to do is create backup files with the correct situation.ini file in them for each confederation ... name them as such... then i should just have to click the correct backup file (UEFA/CONMEBOL) for example, click restore... and go play my game.

I thought this might be a solution for you as well august... just a thought. But cyprus beating romania so heavily really pissed me off.

why not hehe... they've beaten ireland exactly 5-2 in real life, ireland is not weaker than romania...

you actually really helped me very much with your post because i never realized that the script lines you've written are there to define the... ranges for attributes... sounds stupid but i didn't (should be a language problem :) )... foolish me.

but as always i'm looking for a solution that will make it unnecessary to edit between games. but on the other hand as long as i'm playing asia all the time... it also bugged me a bit that korea lost against india.

1-2. well, it's not that terrible. i trust my gameplay. mostly. that's the important thing. if i can trust my gameplay, i mean if experience proved my gameplay being realistic, strange results will start making me happy just like in real life football.

Those guys are just crazy. I've read that, too and there was a link to the sealand web site, with things like "sealand visits the UN", "Sealand applies to the UN", "Sealand applies to the Eurovision Song Contest" (with video!)...

by the way, there are new kits for korea, bolivia and uruguay. the two former i have already downloaded and allowed myself to play each their next match in my wc qualif.
korea took revenge to india beating them 4-0 in seoul, bolivia lost 0-3 to peru.
