need help with photoshop cs3

hi there im totaly newby in kitmaking and in photoshop . so can someone help me with basics, how can i get rid of white background? so its transparrent. thanx

whenever you open a new file, selec transparent background
File - New - Background Content: Transparent

it overwrite the original one, so the new kit is in the zdata that the original kit was
