LOL....and here I thought that the only reason it was on your shelf for this long a time was because of Douglas' unmatched magnetism and brilliance as a dramatic actor?.....and of course, to a leser extent, Downey Jr.

One of the greatest actors ever in my opinion.....not only does he take from his father, but he also surpasses 'em. He's just one of the most compelling and fun actors to watch....even when the script and cast around him are utter **** and predictable, he still finds a way to produce something noteworthy.

falling down
wall street
romancing the stone
american presiden
ghost of darkness
perfect murder
black rain
fatal attraction
the game

all fantastic performances

His film selectivity can be very questionable, but he still always manages to deliver as an actor. For someone who was at one point a huge mega-star....a box office machine of sorts, I think that he's held up very well.

I dunno man, I havent seen all of those films, but he just doesnt do it for me. It may be because I read an interview with him where he came across as a totaly prick, saying things like "I like to test a director out and make sure he's good enough for me" and "Last movie I watched? Catherine and I dont really watch movies". I personally think Fatal Attraction is utter bollocks, and when considered alongside Basic Instinct, they alone should be enough to destroy an actors credibility. Also the last movie I saw him in was a piece of **** called The Sentinal.

But yeah, I'll concede that he can be really, really good ie Wall Street and Traffic and that my dislike for him his more personal than because I think he's a bad actor.

No where near Kirk standard though - never once has one of his performances come close to Spartacus or Colonel Dax in Paths of Glory.

Star Wars Episode I

HBO showed all six movies this past weekend and I decided to DVR them all and watch them one by one in the correct order (1,2,3....6). I have never been a Star Wars fan and I always though it was dumb and taken WAY too seriously but I can't say that I didn't enjoy this movie. It was alright, I'm just looking forward to seeing 3-6, I hear those are the good ones.

hurhur.....yeah, he is/was a complete turd......a flat out reprobate from what I've seen and read of 'em. Although, I think that he's mellowing out a bit with age, he was a notorious pompous prick in his day. Very abusive both to his co-workers and the broads he was banging in those days. But I disregard and let all that pass because I've been a huge fan of his ever since I saw a replay of his appearance on SNL about 12yrs ago....he had one of the most memorable......(a top five in my books) appearances on that show, displaying his range and versatility with such ******* ease and skill.

Still a huge ass scumbag, though. I mean, CMON! What kind of ******* turdbagger comes out publically to claim with such faux sincerity that he's got a sexual addiction? I mean, what ******* man within even a dash of life in 'em doesn't have a sexual addiction?

as far as the comparison between the two........I don't wanna be disparaging the old man, because he put out some memorable performances, but they just don't compare in my books. Michael is by far the superior actor....Kirk was the Mel Gibson of his day imo......not that, that's an indictment of either of 'em, but c'mon....they're no ******* Michael Douglas, man.

Well as I said I havent seen as much of him as you, neither some of those performances or any of his SNL appearances, so I dont have all the facts, but he's never been a guy that appealled to me as an actor.

And yeah, I agree that Kirk was a movie star more than a great actor, but still I find some of his performances absolutely top class and I personally much prefer him to Michael. His performance in Paths of Glory is one of the greatest of all time, by movie star or actor.

PS: Generally I like people more once I learn what an asshole they are :p I've always loved Elliot Gould, but once I learned what a complete and utter **** he used to be in his glory days my respect for him just skyrocketed!

fast food nation....

sheesh....one of the most heartbreaking and gruesome movies that ive seen come down the pike in a long while, man. Two things.........fantastic movie (highly recommend it)............BOY am I glad that I haven't allowed myself to set foot in a fast food joint in more than three years!

one more thing.......ethan hawke.....wow! What a cameo, man. The dude propelled the movie into an even greater realm with the 4mins or so that he was on camera...gotta love 'em, man. What a solid actor.

I rented that earlier this week but haven't got around to watching it yet, sounds like it lives up to what I've heard about it.. will check it out later today for sure

Gut-wrenchingly bleak is how I'd best describe it

I delayed on seeing it when it first came out just because of what I'd heard from friends of mine who had seen it, but my completist nature got the better of me (Linklater is one of my favourites) and I purchased it last week just to add on to my collection of his without any intent on really checking it out.

the acting is phenomenal on all ends, bro. Greg Kinnear/Luis Guzman were their usual outstanding self, the two sisters.....(holy**** were they ******* hot), were awesome. And our boy Fez (how could I forget about 'em) put in a very impressive performance....one of those understated but highly memorable offerings.

also discovered this broad while watching it.....she too was great, and I also found her to be damn hot, bro.

FF Nation was pretty awful. The movie didn't tie anything up in the end and it would have been nice if it had tied more characters in together. If you wanna see an anti fast food movie, watch Supersize Me (documentary on what happens when you go on a all-MacDonald diet for a month).

Avril Lavigne got her acting debut it FF Nation and she wasn't bad.

I thought it was a big improvement over the second film in the series and overall was very enjoyable. I was expecting a garbage sequel, afterall after seeing Pirates 3 and Shrek 3 in the last few weeks I thought Hollywood just made another film to get some $$. Not as good as the Ocean's Eleven but still a very good film and was worth the price of admission. 8/10

For the record by the way, Oceans Thirteen has got brilliant reviews all across the board.
Cool. I saw an interview with Soderbergh last year that really inspired confidence, but when I saw the trailers I became a little nervous as they were piss poor, so I'm glad to hear the brilliant finish to the series is back on the cards. Looking forward to seeing it.

hmm.....Yeah, I here what yer saying, bro. Now that I look back on it and reflect upon what I remember from it in a more objective manner, I can see how some, maybe even a lot of folks would find it as frustrating as you did.

it was very expansive and wide-ranging in its approach, but for the type of book that this movie is based on (a book that's heavily stacked with soci-economical statistics), I think that they did a pretty solid job. But as far as the character/subplot development and growth are concerned, it was kinda lacking, I'd have to concede to that.

hmmm....about the characters being interlinked and all.....didn't they do a decent job of that? The corporation/illegal immigrants/the locals from the town where the movie was set in were connected in their internal/external relations to the main-plot skillfully imo.

Regarding Supersize Me. Yeah I've seen it.......the two pieces are just so differing in many aspects that it's very difficult to compare them fairly. One is just a straight out humorous but implausible documentary, the other is a fictionalized movie version of a non-fiction book.

All I know is that I came away more affected and moved by fast food nation, than I did watching supersize me. I didn't come away being sympathetic or torn emotionally even in the slightest watching SSM. The realism for me just wasn't there. It was as though I was watching a prolonged comedy sketch piece from SNL or something. FFN was jus the opposite of that.....extremely visceral and overpowering in its message and observations.

I don't get the big deal about Supersize Me... it basically took what we already knew and just put it on the big screen. I thought the experiment was pretty pointless tbh, what did it accomplish? Eating only McDonald's is unhealthy and makes you fat... wow, good thing SSM came along or we'd never would have figured that one out!

I'll concede it was an entertaining watch, but I was never really jaw-dropped at anytime, nor did it offer any new information really.

I agree, I found it to me much more of an entertaining watch than an informative documentary. The same with Spurlock's "30 Days" TV series. He is a great showman, and found some very interesting people to talk to, such as the big mac man who is in surprisingly good shape considering he's eatern several (hundred?) thousand of the buggers, but I fail to see that it brought anything new to the fast food debate or had any real merit as an expose.

Last night I watched Le Samourai, often hailed as Jean-Pierre Melville's masterpiece. I love Melville and, while I personally prefer Le Cercle Rouge, this film is really really good and I can see why it's so highly regarded. Beautifully shot and sublimely cool, it was also a rivetting story and genuinely exciting and engrossing. Also came with loads of excellent special features, as is common with Critereon titles. Definately one of Melville's best.

I also watched Cloak and Dagger the other day, a WW2 spy movie by Fritz Lang, another favourite director of mine. This one has dated a bit, both in the quality of the image, which has not retained the sharpness and beauty of many black and white flicks, and in some of the clunky and overly moralistic dialogue, but it is still a very entertaining watch, full of suspense, and one of the first of the breed of globetrotting "epic" spy movies, though it did end a bit abruptly. One of Gary Cooper's better performances. Possibly ripe for a remake?
