I hate it when there's an ultra cheap version of a DVD I want to get and a really cool looking but expensive special edition - leaves an extreme mental dilemma. Donnie Darko is a prime example, same with Blue Velvet, Dune etc. I tend to always go for the special editions and then not watch any of the extras :(

And Tom, I really didnt like Harry Potter four - I just found it to be rushed, boring and generally unentertaining. Number three is by far the best HP movie in my opinion.

agree about HP. Cuaron's was the best (Y)

about Donnie Darko and the DVDs, the special edition is actually the director's cut which is not a better cut than the original movie. it changes some of the songs and explains too much of the plot. the original DD is the best version (Y)(Y)

But the special edition box is all metalic and shiney and cool looking :( Can you get the theatrical version of the movie on the special edition or do you have to watch the directors cut?

I'm looking forward to it very much. It's weird how there are hardly any, if any, movies about wizards, then suddenly two come up at once (The Prestige and The Illusionist).

saw The Last Kiss yesterday, i'm a huge Zach Braff fan (H)

Wasn't as good as Garden State as this isn't his own film, but i thought it was impressive and added a few twists to the usual formula.

Why We Fight. Unlike Fahrenheit 9/11, this paints a much grander, more coherent picture that genuinely terrifies me. Hope it gets released over here on DVD sometime soon.

Just saw that, not bad, any movie that mixes comedy and serious drama and tries to include SIX plot strands, is always going to have problems though.

Write my review at some point, when i can be arsed.

I just saw "Laberinto del Fauno", "Pan's Labyrinth" in english. A great movie, one of the best i have seen this year.

Its in spanish, a coproduction between Mexico and Spain. The director is Guillermo del Toro. The actors are all spaniards.

A Resume of the movie by IMDB:

s the story of a young girl that travels with her mother and adoptive father to a rural area up North in Spain, 1944. After Franco´s victory in the spanish civil war . The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Post-war Fascist repression is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own.

I saw The Queen today - Stephen Frears' new movie about Elizabeth II. Helen Mirren is an early favourite for best actress at the oscars, and one can see why, she is fantastic, as are the entire cast, especially Sheen as Blair and Cromwell as the DoE. The story is good too, and the photography is absolutely fanstastic. Only problem is that the dialogues arent all that good, often seeming unrealistic and artificial, even though they are well delivered. Excellent movie though, especially interesting I imagine for non Brits as it provides a decent insight into the way our country is run, and maintains interest throughout, despite covering what I feared could be quite a mundane portion of history. One of my favourite films of the year so far.

Raging Bull. I slightly underestimated this film. It's definitely one of De Niro's finest performances. Not as good as Taxi Driver, though.

thank you for smoking.

great movie. that cast and the storyline were great. you gotta love charismatic lead characters like nick naylor. supporting cast was just as good. if you haven't seen it, definitely take the time.

Sean's far too evangelist for this movie. Plus I hate Jude Law. He sounds really, really mincing in the interviews he does.

My dad's currently watching The Extraordinary League of Gentlemen. It's not too bad until the bad guys turn up with assault rifles and the bint turns out to be a vampire. Seems a bad plot idea just for the bad guy to turn up, give the good guys a name and then challenge them to a fight.

That's just not how it's done.

At the Edinburgh Film Festival I went to a live interview with Sean Connery and he just abused The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen so badly. He said the director, Stephen Norrington, was "insane" and "moronic" and basically abused the whole cast. As a result, I decided to avoid it.

I am going to go see All The King's Men but I'm not expecting much, apparantly Law is totally wrong for his role and Penn hams it up very badly. I havent seen one good review yet.

Today I saw a docufilm about MPAA censorship called This Film is Not Yet Rated - boy that is a ****ed up system you have in the US. 40% of retailers refuse to stock NC-17's? In the UK, getting an 18 cert is a huge plus point. I liked the film, though it didnt make much of a point, it was entertaining and informative, and succeeds in showing how draconian and unfair film rating is in the US. One of the best documentaries I've seen in the cinema this year.

Aye, Extraordinary Gentlemen just strikes me as a mess. It is based on a proper comic strip, right? Not just some weird compilation of random characters?

Penn doesn't half ham it up. And I can't comment much on Law's performance. I can, however, proclaim he has the gayest voice for a straight actor. He's a total mince.

Not Yet Rated should be good, though. We certainly are lucky to have the BBFC. Aside from when the 80's video nasties came along.
