whatever the attraction of the southerly leagues in europe for players of latin origin, there isnt the same draw for players of a more northerly persuasion i think. i personally never dreamt of playing for real madrid or barca, im sure the same can be be said for a lot of players hailing from the british isles.

As much as i love Rio and desperately want him to stay at United... i think he'd be absolutely perfect for Barca :(

Hopefully we'll never find out if he is perfect for Barca ;)

God I hate the international break, I've read the reserves are playing Motherwell tonight - but it's not on MUTV.

he's good with the ball in the feet?
I think his whole style is suited. As you say he's very good with the ball at his feet, but he also has that whole slightly-arrogant persona that suits Barca.

wait, barça team arrogant? Ha! one of the keys of the triplet were the humility of the players and staff.

I think that's spot on mate. When I was a kid, although I knew about big teams like Real Madrid, AC Milan and many others, my dream was to play for Chelsea. If not Chelsea, I knew at least that I would want to play my football at home in England.

Foreign clubs did not attract me at all. It was never about playing for a big club. It was all about playing for (or against perhaps), the club that you loved. In my case that was Chelsea.

Today's generation of players are not a lot different really. The majority would still rather taste success at home than abroad. Saying that though, I have noticed that when a select few, big foreign clubs, takes an interest in a particular English player, those players have always said that they had to seriously think about it.

Perhaps it's simply about money. Perhaps it's ego. Probably both. A player can satisfy both those cravings in England if he is good enough, so there rarely is a reason to leave. After all, any player who catches the eye of any of those so called big clubs, probably already plays for a big English club.

Yeah, but to be honest if Barca / Madrid wanted him - they'd have made a move before the window closed. Plus it's the Sun and the press mischeif making again.

Today's entry in the "Players linked with United 2009 index" is the Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.

Help?

I would like to add that playing in a system you are used to, playing in front of people you are used to, is mostly a bigger incentive than the idea of challenges elsewhere. We might say that we love challenges, But at the end of the day, we actually don't want any change unless and of course its forced upon on us...

Anyways, Akinfeev rumour is after all still a rumour. I have a feeling that SAF is gonna give Foster and Kusckak [still don't get the spelling right], a chance for a year, after VDS leaves. He will want to test them first before before buying a keeper from somewhere else.

:)

I think (for a select few i must admit - and whether Rio falls into that category is another matter) that the appeal of a new challenge in a new country could be appealing. Especially for someone like Rio who has achieved everything in England. NOT that i want him to leave at all.

Course he will - it's just papers sh*t stirring like they tried with Vida and Ando.

In other news, United have threatened legal action against Le Havre over their repeated claims over the Paul Pogba transfer. It's a pretty stark and aggressive defence too - United are clearly annoyed by this.
