Police to decide on Utd 'thuggery'
Feb 9 - Everton and Merseyside Police will decide today whether to set Manchester United on a collision course with the Football Association once again.
After being flooded with complaints about the conduct of Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Cristiano Ronaldo near the end of United's 4-3 win, Goodison Park officials have sifted through scores of written statements from fans and studied closed-circuit television footage.
They will discuss the evidence with the police before announcing today whether to refer the matter to the FA and have been assured a thorough investigation will be launched, if they do.
An FA spokesman confirmed: "Nothing has yet been brought to our attention, although if it is, we would of course look into it."
A spokesman for Merseyside Police said last night: "In conjunction with Everton FC, a review will be made of any incidents that may have occurred during the match."
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is already embroiled in a bitter wrangle with horseracing magnate John Magnier and still reeling from the FA's recent decision to hit Rio Ferdinand with an eight-month ban for missing a drugs test.
Another clash with authority now appears likely after a late flashpoint that followed Ruud van Nistelrooy's 89th-minute winning goal.
Angry fans from the main stand queued up for nearly an hour to give statements claiming that fans in the family enclosure had been subjected to abusive language and offensive gestures from Keane.
On the opposite side of the ground, there were similar complaints of incitement by Neville and Ronaldo, who was involved in another flare-up seconds later when a fan tried to run on to the pitch to confront him before being bundled away by stewards.
United refused to comment ahead of any possible FA action but are believed to feel there was undue provocation from home supporters.
