I'm sure Mr. Chicago here has no ulterior motive for being so "concerned" about Carsten Charles.
ah but you misunderstand. I am a huge Cubs fan, but a bigger sports fan. I LOVE what CC has done. Completely dominant. However, size of a body does not change the size of a tendon in one's arm. Mechanics, how often they were used in the past, how hard they throw, what pitches they throw... it all plays into the mix. I compared Cubs pitchers because I believed their workload was comparable with CCs and thought it would be a shame if his arm burned out.
You can't really compare Clemens... come on man those kinds of pitchers come around once a decade. Dude threw hard and stayed around. Not sure if HGH had anything to do to help with the longevity... Zambrano as an example? I've watched him every time for the past 5 seasons. He is NOT the same pitcher he once was. His breaking stuff is not as nasty and not as hard, and his fastball is 2-3 miles an hour slower. He was on the DL once already for "tightness". Overuse is murder. Not many pitchers can take one season, let alone multiple ones with the kind of mechanics that Zambrano had. Wood as well. As a rookie he was a flamethrower, used to hit 100 on the radar gun with his fastball. Look at Burnett. In florida he was a god, un-hittable. Now? Lucky if he can string 5 starts without a trip to the DL.
Look, don't get me wrong. This is an opinion of a sports fan. A 21 year old one at that. I would hate to see it happen. But if you think that just because CC is 300 pounds he can keep snapping his arm 130 times a game in a season for the rest of his career, you might want to check back next year when he becomes a shell of his former self. He's been a good pitcher for a while now though, but I did not follow him very closely in Cleveland so I can't give a true expert opinion.
Btw, until the Brew Crew shows they can beat the Cubbies, nothing to worry about. Last 2 weeks should be fun though. Think the schedule makers knew something we didn't?
