I am not going to get too involved in this discussion, as it is repetitive and Alex is about the only one who makes any sense when the issue of Oceania and qualification spots comes up. But for those of you claiming that Australia would not have performed at the last world cup... well they would have dispatched of both Saudi Arabia and China at least, and most certainly would not have lost 9-0 to Germany. Also, they outclassed England, albeit in a friendly, but it was a friendly on English soil. Put them in the AFC and with a first choice team they would make the finals. New Zealand didn't do Oceanias reputation much good at the Confederations Cup, but Australia should not be judged on that.

If the World Cup is meant to be a showcase of world football, then it seems pretty strange that Fifa goes out of their way to make sure that not all the world is represented. Unless you want to argue that the competition is somehow enhanced by having 9-0 defeats, as a result of Asia having 4.5 spots, and Oceania 0.5.

You seem to be unable to grasp the point that nearly everyone who objects to Oceania having an automatic qualification spot is on the grounds that the quality of teams, with the exception of Australia, is woefully inadequate.

and if you want to include the qualifying, and therefore find the best 32 teams to play inthe final stages, then that would mean EVERY team on the planet has to play EVERY other team, home and away, in a league format to find the BEST 32 teams in the world, which would then plau EVERY other team in the 32 to find the BEST team in the world. Simply, a Cup format does NOT find out the BEST team in the world. The FIFA world cup is a SHOWCASE of GLOBAL football, which make NO sense when a part of the globe is virtually left out.
But I don't think they would be getting a divine right. I think that with the exception of some South American teams, most people here don't realise the difficulties in getting a National team together when most of the players ply their trade on the other side of the world. Which is exactly what Australia faces, and is the reason they were not at the Confederations Cup. Yet you saw what a first-choice Australian team did to England.
