Eriksson to announce squad

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson will name his initial 23-man squad for Euro 2004 at 1400 BST on Monday.
Defence is Eriksson's main worry with Rio Ferdinand banned, Jonathan Woodgate injured and Gareth Southgate a doubt.

Sol Campbell and John Terry will be the first-choice pairing but if Southgate fails to make it, there would be two other centre-back places up for grabs.

Wes Brown, Ledley King, Ugo Ehiogu and Jamie Carragher would be the likely four to contest those two spots.

The other possible place up for grabs is in attack, with Jermain Defoe and Darius Vassell likely to fight it out

However, there was speculation at the weekend that Eriksson might take both Defoe and Vassell, sacrificing a midfielder, which would probably mean Scott Parker missing out

If the England boss takes the full complement of eight midfielders Parker is likely to beat off competition from his Chelsea club-mate Joe Cole.

Eriksson can make changes up until 2 June, but can only draft new faces in after that if there are fresh injuries.

The Swede admitted Southgate's knee ligament injury looks unlikely to clear up in time.

He told Football Focus: "He can't start practising until June which makes it difficult to get match-fit."

Manchester United defender Brown admitted he does not expect to be named in Eriksson's squad after a difficult season.

If I got picked, it would be great," he said. "But after missing most of the season, then not doing too well when I came back and taking my time to get back to form, it doesn't look like it will happen."

Arsenal defender Ashley Cole, a certain member of Eriksson's squad, admits the prospect of facing France on 13 June is an intimidating one.

"It's going to be a really hard game but the England boys are confident. Anything can happen on the day," said Cole.

"We've got our key players, like Steven Gerrard, so hopefully we can get a result.

"We're a bit scared of the players they've got but we're not going to show them too much respect in the game."

ERIKSSON'S PROBABLE SQUAD
Goalkeepers: James, Robinson, Walker
Defenders: G Neville, P Neville, A Cole, Bridge, Campbell, Terry, two from
Southgate/Brown/King/ Ehiogu/Carragher
Midfielders: Beckham, Butt, Gerrard, Parker, Hargreaves, Scholes, Dyer, Lampard
Strikers: Owen, Rooney, Heskey, Vassell or Defoe

well, since the ref that screwed italy got fired and unless another ref is paid, this should be a good tournament

when will politics stay the **** away from football?

i still cringe when i think of WC2002 and the way italy got ripped

all we can hope for is a fairly officiated tournament

The FPF have decided to declare not guilty Rui Jorge in his doping case. So he could play at Euro2004.

Man, that's bullsh|t, Korea got really screwed over in that game. There should have been a couple of red cards against the Italian team. Ex., Korea's defender having his nose broken.

i'd start Makkay over RvN. Makaay had a betterseason and deserves it more

Probably did have a better season, but Ruud did play his part in getting Holland there.

I can see Ruud finishing top scorer if they play the same team that beat Scotland 6-1 on agg.

no. it's at dragão. I took the information from the euro2004 site.

then the site is wrong, because Bessa is holding 3 matches, one of them being a 4er final... and it woulnd't make sense if Dragao holded the 4er and semi...

euro 2000, trezeguet broke toldo's nose, i don't recall him getting a red card, what i do remember is the korean defender hacking at totti's leg and then totti getting the yello, and red card

and look at the game against spain, that explains it all

Ruud has done far more with the Dutch team than Makaay. He definitely has a starting spot. I would play with Van der Vaart behind RVN, Kluivert or Makaay as second striker just doesn't work.
