Portugal vs Sweden [P+R]

Vinnie Jones

Senior Squad
I don´t think Ronaldo was miserable. He made the assist in the second goal. The only players who were really miserable were Ricardo (again),Tiago (probably because of the pubalgia) and Rui Costa (Deco should be a starter, without any doubt, altough Rui Costa is a great player, he doesnt produce in our Nt, his passing was awfull, shot accuracy nill and his forward runs are inefective). In the first half we dominated the game, mainly because of Figo (great form, but we can´t only rely solely on him, other players should step up and help him), Pauleta (always influencial up front) and Petit (who did a good job on the midfield, playing for two because Tiago was inexistent).
In the second half, our string of play was inexistent and it looked like everyone was waiting for an individual play to solve the match. Ronaldo and Boa Morte got a couple of good runs but the crossing...terrible (Boa Morte really needs to get some practice on those crosses).
Sweden, i cant say much about the team. Their goals came from errors of the Portuguese Nt but you gotta praise their almost 100% effectiveness. Their midfield is strong phisically with good pace but they lack flair and technic (altough Kallstrom did pretty well). Central defenders looked a lil bit shaky but they got good presence in the box. About your precious Ibrahimovic, he did a couple of runs, one or two tricks, nothing special. In my opinion Skoog gave much more problems too Couto and Andrade.
I was at the stadium and i can only say that it was disapointing to see less than half stadium filled, dunno about the official numbers. Scolari was able to spoil that wonderfull relation that we had with our Nt, When it was 1-1 i saw a couple of panuelos. With 1-2 ppl were only verbally abusing Scolari and werent pay attention to the game. With the 2-2 ppl were still disapointed but atleast cheered the players.
We really need the 20 day "estágio" before the Euro, so players get used to playing with each other. There is no "entrosamento" and it´s understandable when you get 1-2 day of practices before the match. We need to revive the relationship Nt/supporters with these 2 upcoming matches and have a positive attitude, with less controversy (Scolari, North, Vitor Baía etc).

P.s this is the Nt thread dont make it a benfiquistas and Sportinguista dispute thread ffs.

We played almost every single team that will be in the euro and couldn't beat anyone. That HAS to mean something, and it's not good.
But is there some hope?

The Rui Costa affair

He can't be a starter, full stop.
Few teams had the talent to win a major competition without playing good defence. Imho, a solid defence starts with the players upfront, applying strong pressure on the opposing defenders and thus leaving them few room to operate and organize their attack.
What does Rui Costa have to do with this? This defensive scheme only works if ALL players put some effort, and the AC Milan player simply can't be arsed.
I could also mention how he hasn't been playing well all season, how he misses stupid, dumb goals one after the other, but the main reason is simply that this guy is focal on our lack of defensive attitude.

Ricardo or Baía? Tiago or Maniche?

The first question is easy: like Baía played in the WC when Ricardo should have been used bcs he was better at that time, Ricardo is now the undisputed owner of the n.º1 spot but is having a subpar season. Baía, on the other hand, is currently the best portuguese goalkeeper and I rank him on the european top-10. He is so good inbetween and away the posts; the confidence and guiding he brings to the defence is unmeasurable!
Tiago is a great midfielder. He defends well but also brings a lot of offense to his game. This year he hasn't been that good, but definitely has a place in the 23. Maniche is having a better year than Tiago, though. Lots of international experience, works well under pressure, has an amazing long ball pass and also scores many goals.
It's a shame if any of these 4 guys aren't called.

Postiga, Hugo Viana, Boa-Morte?

The first two don't have enough rythm to play an european championship that is played intensively in a single month. Has nothing to do with their quality (which is high) and their current moment of form (which is low).
Boamorte, on the other hand, can be a useful card to be played in a second half, especially when we're leading the score and need some dangerous counter-attack (if that will ever happen :D).

The Roteiro Ball

I think it's crap. But seriously, why aren't our players using this ball already in the Superliga? What are they waiting for?

What can we do in the Euro?

I'm pretty confident, actually. First, we can't do worse than we did in the last WC. Second, and unlike what happened 2 years ago, we have decisive players in great shape:
- Figo is currently Real's best galáctico;
- Pauleta is a goal-scoring machine. He's among europe's elite strikers;
- Paulo Ferreira: best european RB;
- Cristiano Ronaldo: can decide a match. How many players out there can decide a match on their own?

And finally, we had a good first-half tonight, although too Figo-dependent. Still, these were just prep games, and we all know how the portuguese players react when there's no real competition: they don't care at 100%, no matter how much they try. When the Euro begins, it will be a different story. Expect a B I G difference in attitude and football quality!

miserable games of Ronaldo and Rui Costa and especially Ricardo. Postiga and Viana clearly don't have spot in our NT.

Hey look, I'm agreeing with you! :p

The Red Devil
Personally, I wouldn't blame Rui Jorge for his own goal, just look at the cross and see Quim's hand touch the ball which deflects the ball onto Jorge's foot.

Just my opinion, highlights soon.

Quim also had an awsome save when it was 2-1, which could of made it 3-1, because Rui Jorge was looking at the stars:rolleyes:

Also Sokota scored today and Zahovic also for there NT.

I think we will use the Roteiro next season in the SuperLiga.

What? Where did you read that? :kader:

We need to use it now, before the Euro, not after. That rock is crap! I don't want our league to use it ever after!

I'm only supposing. If the Liga has a contract with Adidas they will use the last adidas ball. Before 2002 they used the Tango of Euro2000 and after the WC the fevernova.

Zahovic scored but Sokota not. Klasnic scored the croatian goal at Macedonia.

Paulo Da Silva

Starting XI
Pauleta is a great striker but he's alteady 31, teams wouldn't waste a lot of money on him.

RICARDO SUCKSSSS!did you guys see his face after the goal went in. Hilarious!!!!

Pauleta's Goals v Marseille

I've only seen Pauleta three times this season on Sky Sports & Eurosport(Portugal v England, PSG v Marseille, Portugal v Sweden), but a player of his quality should be playing in the Champions League, he is class.

If he does well at Euro 2004, maybe a bigger club will come knocking.

Thanks for the Pauleta goal's vid! shokz, you're the man! (H)

And yeah, Pauleta turned 31 today but I think he still has a good couple of years ahead of him. Just look at a very similar player: Alan Shearer. ;)

Pauleta will return to Portugal to a club of the big 3 for sure, next season or in 2005. He never played in the SuperLiga, he's a very strange case of success. (H)

shokz thanks for the highlights

Why did Ronaldo do miserable? :confused:

I thought he saved some huge shame from portugese people and especially from Yossarin. World class corner, at least he putted 1 good corner for Portugal, unlike at United they always suck.
