There were not only celts and Italians but....Canadians, Argentinians, Spanish, British, Portuguese, Japanese.

Even if people here might not seem fanatics of the national team....Toronto is soccer crazy and people all over (especially Brits I know) would love to see Canada play just to support them.

Like Im baffled by your "Edmonton" (trying not to laugh) comment. Hope you know that last summer's games were so successful that there are going to be (atleast) 2 more games this summer if not more.

I grew up here most of my life man. I could have counted thousands of conversations where people are saying "Why the hell dont they play in toronto?". Especially Toronto that its so pro sport. (Hockey/B-ball/even LAcross....always packed.)

Atleast Toronto is getting the York University Stadium. (which is too bad since my university originally had the plans for it but blew it). In Canadasoccer.com.....it even says that its going to be the new official home for NT. (So CSA wants Toronto now and are convinced of its fanbase.....Little hole in your argument there bud)

farther from the truth? right.

Well, I don't live in Toronto right now, but I did live there for several years, I've also lived on the west coast and speaking of support for the Canadian NT, I still think there's more support elsewhere. Yeah, ofcourse I realize how the ethnic diversity in Toronto is big, and there's a lot of fans of soccer there but it's not so much for the Canadian team. I've seen the NT play in Toronto before, back in the late 80's in exibition games against Chile and Greece and I can honestly tell you there wasn't more than a very small handful of people cheering for Canada. The overwelming majority were fans of Greece and Chile, so it was basicly like playing away for the Canadians. On the other hand, out west it's a bit different, Canada has always had great home support (exept this year) at Swanguard stadium in BC, and yes in Edmonton too. If you think that's laughable, then you haven't been following Canadian soccer for the past decade. Edmonton is where we've had some of our most memorable results, like the 1-1 draw against Brazil in front of a packed PRO-Canadian crowd...if that game was in Toronto, there'd be lots of people too but Canada wouldn't get the same support, no way....and you can't use Roma/Celtic as an indicator of what attendance would be like for Canadian NT games, that was a special event and something Canadians aren't used to seeing live. I'd bet more than half of the people at those games in the summer wouldn't even know what Canada's schedule was unless they were playing one of the countires they came from.

Anyways, I was talking about the NT in Edmonton and Vancouver, I think if you read what I said thoroughly you'll see I did say that for a league team that only places like Toronto or Montreal would be able to support them (although according to the attendances Rochester Rhino posted, Toronto is well below Montreal & Vancouver  )

Anyhow, best way to fill the stadium for a league game in a place like Toronto IMO, is get an MLS team, then sign some well known Europeans from countries who have large communities in T.O. Obviously not younger stars, but players that are heading toward the end of their careers....can you imagine if someone like Figo or Zola decided to play their last year in toronto? The draw would be amazing...

IMO Soccer>Hockey

for 28 000 000+ people (we are 30mil in Canada) HOCKEY>>>>soccer

League or no league, there's no money to make in soccer. 15-20 thousand dollars a year doesn't cut it to be a pro.

We that love soccer care more about Europeen and south american soccer. It's up to pure blood Canadians to start the rally. Never gonna happen. They love too much their curling and hockey. They don't want us to impose soccer to them either.

Only healthy soccer here is women's soccer.

First time I post in the Soccer Forum in a long time.

Shinji is right regarding the loyalty in Toronto. Take Exibit A: If Italy were to ever play in Toronto(hopefully that never happens:p) 99% of the people in the stadium will be cheering for Italy and would be celebrating like if it were a world cup goal if Totti or Del Piero scoring against the Canadian NT. I'm refering to Second generation Canadian Italians, not first generations who have the obvious tie of birthplace to Italy.

The Canadian NT should play in Edmonton(Commonwealth) whenever they are playing against a country with a large community of immigrants and in Toronto when they play the US or any other nation with far fewer immigrants. BTW, 40% of Toronto's population consists of immigrants, not the 75% that was thrown out. I point it out because the difference in the numbers is a few million people.

The A-league is complete garbage and I believe the Lynx play out of Centennial park in Etobicoke which is complete garbage. I've seen some of the games on FSW Canada and they are of low quality, Rochester and Montreal are the only 'decent' teams. I use the term loosely because in comparison to your average league, they are pretty bad.

Toronto needs to focus on getting an MLS franchise and having them play at York University. I attend York so I would hopefully get a nice discount on season tickets.:D

I believe the MLS expansion franchise cost is $10 million US, which MLSE could easily afford but they're a bunch of bureaucrats so we'll have to wait for someone else to step up. A better option is to buy the Kansas city wizards who are for sale for about the same price and you already get a franchise with a roster established.(Y) Bring in a few names people actually recognize and you could get a good average attendence.

Canadians don't care about soccer because our national team sucks. Look at the women's team compared to the men. The women's team are winning and therefore get more fans. The men's team suck and only have the die hard voyageur fans.

For people to care about the Canadian NT, they will have to make it to the World Cup. And that won't happen until at least 2010.

An MLS team can be successful IF it is marketed right. I mean we have a friggin lacrosse team that fills up 15000 seats in the ACC. So it should be possible to get that many people in the York Stadium for the MLS team.

Sorry, to late, that's aleady Rochester's plan, they are either going to be anexpansion team in 2006, or the Kansas City team will relocate here and will become the Rochester Rhinos.

Back on the attendance thing

2004
Calgary - 1,258
Edmonton - 1,478
Montreal - 9,279
Toronto - 2,444
Vancouver - 4,833
Rochester - 10,181
League Average - 3,879

2003
Calgary - 1,070
Montreal - 7,236
Toronto - 2,651
Vancouver - 4,292
Rochester - 10,169
League Average - 3,336

2002
Calgary - 1,458
Montreal - 5,178
Toronto - 1,730
Vancouver - 3,769
Rochester - 10,008
League Average - 3,037

2001
Montreal - 2,103
Toronto - 2,795
Vancouver - 5,542
Rochester - 10,780
League Average - 2,954

i could keep on going all the way to 1997 but i'll stop for now unless you want me to keep going.

the reason i started this thread in the first place was to figure out some new ideas on the issue. After many disagreements and lockhorns.....the ideas are really good.

so i guess we all agree that its best for Canada to enter the MLS. That would definately be great. If promoted right....(when I went to see Roma/celtic.....I saw a big "Linx" add that came up once in a while and it wasnt very good at all.

The MSL would definately grow but Canada needs atleast 2-3 teams (Like NBA Canada had 2 at first).

The thing is that I think some Canadians are close minded. In Japan no body said "Soccer is here to kill our baseball!". Like I remember ppl screaming "**** you and take your soccer with you!" when the Greeks celebrated their win vs. France right beside Paramount Theatre in Toronto.

True it was only 1 asshole...but it shows the mentality. Im amazed how fast the J-League grew. Noted that Soccer was already popular in many parts of Japan. But now its 45% taken over and just about to dethrone baseball there (I aint even making THAT statistic up <as i exagerate often>:p.) (Go to JFA site for some of that info)

Id gladly go see an MLS team. Who knows how far it could grow into. Imagine an "FA Cup" type tournament between Canada and USA....that would rock. Interest in Canada would soon highten (if even slowly).

anyways i liked the ideas here. Im looking forward to going to York for the Youth World Cup (I still dont know how U of T could have given it away.) :kader:

soccer's big problem in Canada is the media. channels like TSN have shown curling and cancelled champions league soccer over it. Apperently there is a law in canada that protects canadian sports, music, etc....

it happens in radio, TV,etc....channels are sopposed to show a certain amount of canadian crap everyday.

personally the right time to get a soccer team in canada, or a league, would be know that there isn't any NHL hockey, and probably won't be for a few more years. Unfortubately it takes years to set up something like this.

MLSE can easily afford to put a team in Toronto, but they won't

canadian Media would rather talk about wayne gretzky's sperm, and how great a hockey player it can develop in to.......or how Crosby lost his jersey in a plane......... or show henderson's goal against Russia in the summit series about twenty times every minute.

i'm hoping for an MLS team in Toronto, but i doubt it will happen.

Sorry? Rochester hasn't confirmed anything so I don't know what your apologizing for. You got a nice stadium being built and everything but MLS hasn't annoucned anything yet.;)

------------------------------------------------

Either way, Toronto is going to get a MLS franchise by 2007, whether it's the Kansas City Wizards(unlikely) or an expansion franchise is the only question remaining. The obvious choice is an expansion team headed up by MLSE.

I saw Richard Peddie, President of MLSE, on sportsnet awhile ago discussing this very topic. He gave the usual cop-out answer of "we need to investigate it further and see if it's viable". MLSE better step up, $10 million is pennies when you consider they're paying Jalen Rose $15 million to come off the bench.

It'd be nice if the owners of the Argos stepped up and bought a franchise, one of them is a York Alumni and is the main reason the stadium is being built at York.

Oh yeah, if this stadium is going to be ready for 2006 for the Argos they better get started, they haven't done a damn thing, they still have to demolish the old arena(used for exams only) and get to work.

Zauli, comments like yours are the reason why this forum becomes unreadable at times. A mod should yellow card you for being an idiot and threadcrapping.:|

i don'y know about 2007, i don't think the MLS wants to expand that quickly, they already said that they are going to add two more teams for the 2006 season, i think they should wait a while for those 4 teams to get a solid base and maybe one of the franchises won't work out and toronto can replace them.

MLS has promised Toronto a team for 2006. All they need are investors to pay up the 10 mil dollar fee.

have they really, i haven't heard anything at all about toronto being in the MLS in 2006 or in any article from mls, espn, fox sports, the top two canidates are Rochester and Seattle.

i think Canada will focus more on the hockey situation right now.

i know a lot of people that would rather see an NFL team come to Toronto than an MLS. id like to see the MLS expand to Toronto but i dont think id go to see their games. maybe watch a few on tv but thats it.

there would have to be a poll or something. But for me....Ive asked so many people that would support an MLS team. Itll prob happen around the Youth World Cup.

For Football though...it would work if it was NFL cause CFL has almost no support in Toronto (compared to the rest of Canada). Ive went to a few Argos games and you could hear a pin drop.
