Reds' Alexis interest confirm

Malaga have confirmed that Liverpool are trying to sign their defensive starlet Alexis as part of the deal to take El Hadji Diouf in the opposite direction.

The 19-year-old is rated as one of the best prospects in the Spanish game and has already attracted interest from a host of European clubs.

He caught the eye of numerous scouts with his showing at the European Under-17 Championship a couple of years ago, and Internazionale, Aston Villa and Marseille, as well as Barcelona and Real Madrid, are all reported to have approached Malaga with enquiries.

However, the Primera outfit are determined to hold on to the youngster who is expected to establish himself in their first team this season.

Indeed, Malaga president Serafin Roldan revealed that Liverpool's insistence on securing first option on Alexis was threatening to scupper the loan deal for Senegalese striker Diouf.

"We are not prepared to allow them an option on him (Alexis)," Roldan declared.

Despite still trying to finalise a deal for Diouf, Roldan went on to admit that his club were 'very close' to reaching an agreement with Valencia that would see hit-man Salva Ballesta join the club on a season-long loan for the second year running.

"Salva is our priority and we are very close to an agreement with Valencia," he added.

Does anybody know anithing about him? (Alexis)
is he a good defender?

Eto'o switch complicates Owen's Real deal
England striker could leave for as little as £12m

Dominic Fifield
Thursday August 12, 2004
The Guardian

Michael Owen was left to train with Liverpool's reserves last night as his prospective transfer to Real Madrid was complicated over the package put forward by the Spanish club.

Real had hoped to use Samuel Eto'o, the Cameroon striker they jointly own with Real Mallorca, as a makeweight in the move to reduce the cash settlement Liverpool would seek to smooth Owen's passage to Madrid. But Rafael Benítez's interest in Eto'o has cooled, prompting Madrid reluctantly to sanction his sale to Barcelona last night and scuppering their original proposition in the process.

With Madrid understood to be reluctant to part with another striker, Fernando Morientes, Liverpool are now seeking a larger transfer fee - albeit a relatively affordable one of £12m for a player of Owen's calibre - for the unsettled England striker. A compromise should still be reached, but the transfer may not now be completed until well into next week, further delaying the Merseyside club's own forays into the market.

The wait has also left Owen in limbo. The 24-year-old yesterday returned from the 2-0 Champions League qualifying win in Graz to be confronted by Spanish TV crews at Liverpool airport. He was whisked away through a side exit but returned to Melwood a few hours later and, ignominiously, was left to train with the reserve players who, like him, had not featured on Tuesday night.

With Liverpool having sanctioned his sale, his representatives spent the day in talks in the Spanish capital, with a Real offficial saying : "We are pleasantly surprised that Liverpool are happy to talk about the sale of Michael Owen to Real Madrid." But last night's twists over the move will have frayed nerves at Anfield.

Liverpool and Owen's agent Tony Stephens, of SFX, are driving the potential deal, with Real in no immediate rush to complete the signing as long as it goes through before transfer window closes on August 31. For Liverpool the sale is more pressing. Owen's value diminishes with each day his contract ticks down towards its expiry next summer, as does the time in which they can find a replacement.

The Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso should still complete a move to Liverpool from Real Sociedad in the next 48 hours, but any other major reshaping of Benítez's squad may have to wait for Owen's departure or a new investment proposal from the former building tycoon Steve Morgan. Indeed, it seems increasingly likely Owen could be followed out of Anfield by the chairman David Moores who, unlike Morgan, did not attend the game in Austria.

Morgan is expected to present a revised £75m investment plan before next week's scheduled board meeting which could see Moores' majority shareholding in Liverpool diluted. That is likely to prompt his resignation as chairma, while also providing Benítez with much-needed transfer funds as he attempts to reshape his squad.

Meanwhile Eto'o is due at Barcelona this morning for a medical ahead of an £18m move. The striker had been outraged to discover that his move might have been jeopardised by Madrid's desire to use him as a makeweight for Owen.

"For some time I have wanted to wear the Barcelona shirt," Eto'o said before launching a thinly veiled attack on Madrid. "But until now that hasn't been possible because of the continual obstacles placed in my path by a club that you all know well, a club that I don't want to return to because they never showed any faith in me." Those obstacles were removed last night, though there are new ones for Owen.

Real Sociedad drop Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso has been omitted from Real Sociedad's squad for a friendly on Wednesday, fuelling rumours he is on the verge of joining Liverpool.
The Spanish club have already confirmed they have received an offer for the midfielder - thought to be £10.7m.

And Sociedad also revealed they are willing to sell the player, who played twice at Euro 2004, at the right price.

Alonso, 22, could replace midfielder Danny Murphy, who joined Charlton on Tuesday for £2.5m.

Alonso made his international debut in a 4-0 win against Ecuador last year.

The central midfielder was unable to prevent Spain being eliminated by Portugal at the European Championship.

Sociedad are thought to need to raise cash following the arrival of Mikel Arteta from Rangers during the summer.

Benitez told the board Owen not worth £100,000 a week and i agree with him. Benitez also unhappy with Owen's attitude. would of like Eto'o in the deal but £12m not too bad.

newsflash... his career is already ruined, he most probably won't be a starter for Liverpool this season because they have better strikers and Liverpool should cash on him while they still have the chance.

if there's one club that doesn't need him, it's indeed Real Madrid though

At first I didn't want Owen to go, because he's been at Liverpool for so long. But if we could get Mori or Eto'o PLUS 10mil, that'd be a very good deal. Plus their wage would be no where near 100k a week, thats just a joke.

Eto's gone to Barca and Moro is cup-tied. We kept Owen on bench to keep him un-tied, wish Real had done the same with Morientes.

It seems like Real did that on purpose, Owen won't sign an extension and they'll either get him cheap during the winter window, or just wait till his contract runs out and get him free :kader:

Wright-Phillips talks on hold

Aug 12 2004
Daily Post

SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS'S future at Manchester City was still unresolved yesterday after it was believed contracts talks had broken down.

The winger has two years left on his current deal but City are desperate for him to sign an extension as he continues to attract attention from other Premiership clubs including Liverpool and Tottenham.

Advisors for Wright-Phillips were at the City of Manchester Stadium for further negotiations yesterday and although initially the club said a new deal was close, reports suggest that talks have stalled.

Nope, he'll go in the next few days. Six months of "I'll be signing a new contract soon" and now this. I think that the little prick was waiting for this all along. He can go f*ck himself as far as I'm concerned. :kader:

Liverpool are believed to have agreed a deal to sign Barcelona winger Luis Garcia, according to reports emanating from Spain.

Spanish radio claims Barcelona have agreed to the sale of the Spanish international after signing Samuel Eto'o from Real Mallorca.

Liverpool were initially thought to be keen on taking Garcia on loan for the whole of next season, but reports claim they have agreed a €9 million (£6 million) deal for the wide man.

Garcia's first team chances seem limited for the new season as Barca have been busy in the transfer market bringing in the likes of Deco and Ludovic Giuly at Camp Nou.

The 26-year-old did not train with Barcelona on Thursday and it is believed that the move could be announced as soon as Friday.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is a big fan of the midfielder and is keen to bolster his options having lost Vladimir Smicer to injury and Danny Murphy to Charlton.

Garcia, who is predominantly a left-sided midfielder, can play in a variety of positions and would add options to Benitez's team.

Benitez tried to sign Garcia when he was in charge of Valencia, but it appears he has finally got his man and he will become his second signing from Spain following the capture of Josemi from Malaga.

we still need a right winger!!

10-12 is kind of 'not that much' for a player like Owen i think... But because his contract is due to expire in a year and is already wanting to move we wont get much more.

But if we do indeed get Garcia and Alonso, judging by reports, we've done well....

I havent heard much of this Garcia, what is he like? How did has he done in recent years for his club? Can anyone summerize what to expect if we do sign him?
