If you're having problems reading your opponents on a physical level, try to pay attention to his betting patterns (even in hands you're not competing in). Get as much info as possible on your Villain. You'll quickly notice if he's a LAG or TAG player.
Try to lure your Villain out of his shell: small candybets, continuation betting, even dare to throw away good hands if you're in doubt (remember that almost all pros will fold Aces if it's their first hand).
Another thing to decrease the amount of bad calls/bad laydowns/bad beats is to not get too involved in a pot. Re-evaluate your odds, try to get as much info from the board as possible: if you have two pair and there's a straight or flush possibility on the board, fold your hand when there's a serious bet and you're in dire need of chips.
An example of how to evaluate players and their betting patterns from my tournament win last Thursday:
Easy check as it's folded around to the SB who in turn just calls the BB. I've been playing at the same table with Lilredhead for an hour or so now. She's a loose passive player who just fooled around with someone else at the table for the last couple of hands.
I hit bottom pair on the flop. The 4 and 5 don't scare me. Lil just checks and smooth calls my 2BB bet. I now put her on a pair (6's to T's)
I presume she doesn't have a T (she should have bet or either check/raised my 2BB bet, the way she has been doing the entire time). The call makes me put her on a straight draw (she's got the A, 6 or 7)
I hit my 6 high straight (yeah yeah, nice suck out on the river). As I really believe there's a chance at a split pot or a higher kicker for Miss Lil I don't push as this would be a worthless decision. Again I bet 2BBs, again she just calls (obviously she has the straight/no bet or C/R so not a 7 high straight)
Surprise surprise as my 62o pw0nz AA. Let no one ever tell you again you can't get reads from online play...
Hope this helped you a bit. Good luck at the tables next time.
btw @ Rob: That QJ all in raise was just ugly.
Please tell me you got some of that money back in a brutal fashion...
