What is appalling is people pointing fingers at what little others are doing. It's called backbiting, on a very large scale. It's one thing to write to the government and ask them to do more, but its another to feel disgust when you dont even know whats really going on. People arent sure as to what governments really give, or people in the government personally give.

Anyway as a musilm you are not supposed to point fingers and say he is giving too little or too much. Because you dont know what people give secretly or openly. I know from personal experience that arabs are generous people, (okay so some might be greedy pigs) but its just disheartening to hear muslims speak of others in this way. Just as people complained that the US gave too little too early on. Yes, wealthier people have an obligation to give more, this is an Islamic principle, but again, it doesnt have to be done in the open for everyone to know.

Amazing how people can write up articles as if they are actually there to witness the bank transactions/charity donations of arabs or those in the entire muslim world. This isnt a race to see who is more generous.

Damn it!

few ships of Pakistan navy were at Maldives when tsunami struck in the region.. One of the ship's name is Bahadur.. as i recall...
Pakistan Navy saved about 300 ppl.
They're still doing those operations with rescue helicopters . .etc.
I also know that they(PN) setup field hospitals.
I also know that later(after a day of disaster) massive food donations were given too

In real islam your right hand shouldn't know what your left hand does when it comes to donating.....which means that nobody should know if you donated or not... even your other arm if you know what i mean.....

ppl bragging about helping others are wrong

the funny thing is how America and the media in particular all of a sudden started caring about this region of the world... they've been poor and under disaster after disaster and war after war.... now everybody is weeping??... such hypocrits :f***:

Does it mean that we, Muslims, have donated a lot of money; it's just that it was so secret that nobody knows it?

There are many things we have to take into consideration such as:
1) In Arab countries, the individuals are far richer than the government, so donations are named by the individuals and not the countries. Such immense donations, immense as they are. (And believe me THEY ARE... I've seen what Gulf Arabs donations could do), they don't make it to the news and same applies for any other Western individual donation (added to it the secrecy of a Muslim's donation). Governments donations are those that make it to the news for a variety of reasons.

2) Living in an Arab country, charity is almost seen EVERYWHERE. The easiest and fastest community to raise a fund or organize charity work is seen in a Muslim community, however poor the individuals are. Simply because charity is HIGHLY encouraged in Islam in a way no other ideology has.

3) Most Arab countries suffer from an economic system collapse (mainly because of the non-islamic, non-scientific handling of economic issues; believe it or not, the USA and Japan's economy follows Islamic economic rules more than any other Arab country), which is why no HUGE donations are to be expected from these poor governments, what's expected from the governments is mainly offering human resources such as medical aid, temporary residences...etc. which is what's really happening now on a higher scale than money donations. Which is why major HUGE money donations are given by the individuals not the government, as I mentioned before.

4) In Islam, charity highly includes 'secrecy' in its meaning. Except in certain cases when charity is made in public to encourage the deed. I don't think this is the case in the Asian Tsunamis because donations are flooding from all over the world even some Asian countries have temporarily stopped accepting them until proper donation-handling systems have been put. India being an example.

5) I must say that I always hated the way people brag about donations, in this case or any other. Donations should be given for the sole purpose of helping someone, without making this person shameful or highly aware of this aid. If anyone of us faces a financial problem and recieves help from someone, I wouldn't like this someone bragging all over the society with this aid. You don't need to have a certain belief to understand that. Moreover, muslim's donations are given for the sole purpose of pleasing God by helping a person in need. Not for having a better public image...etc.

6) Finally an IMPORTANT NOTE: Those who say that this Tsunami is a punishment and so... that is plain superstitious non-islamic non-religious crap. Islam has made it clear that this life isn't a place of reward/punishment.. it's a place of deeds and work. You simply reep what you sow. Which is why Islam came encouraging work and knowledge seeking as evident with the major scientific uprising in all scientific fields; philosophy, theology, astronomy, medicine and law during the Islamic civilization era exdending over more than a century especially from 813 - 833 C.E. which may be considered the 'golden age' of science and learning. But to contradict all of that and say the Tsunami is a punishment and stuff like that is so sad to hear. This isn't a place for punishment or reward as regards a person's sins/beliefs. If it were, then no disbeliever would find a drop of water to drink. Neither is any individual's beliefs a reason for punishment (by another individual) as clearly stated in the last line of this verse:
Say : O ye that reject Faith
I worship not that which ye worship,
Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
And I will not worship that which ye have been wont to worship,
Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
To you be your Way, and to me mine.

My condolences to the victims of this disaster, I really hope they get over it. The Asians have a marvellous ability to rebuild and prosper... who would have known that Japan -a group of islands struck by 2 nuclear bombs- would prosper into this amazing economic and scientific giant... maybe it was this nuclear tragedy that gave these people a thrust towards progress and prosperity... I really hope for the best.

Time to put your money where your mouth is"
------------------------------------------------------

...courtesy of the Reuters news agency of Britain, here is a synopsis of tsunami-relief aid pledged as of Tuesday. I have re-ranked the list into unabashedly nonpolitically correct order, beginning with the “infidels”:

Japan, $500 million; United States, $350 million; Norway, $180 million; Britain, $96 million; Italy, $95 million; Sweden, $80 million; Spain, $68 million; China, $61 million; France, $56 million; Denmark, $55 million; Australia, $47 million; European Union, $40 million; Netherlands, $34 million; Canada, $33 million; Germany, $27 million; Switzerland, $23 million; Ireland, $14 million; Portugal, $11 million; South Korea, $5 million; Taiwan, $5 million; African Union, $100,000 (the AU nations have human-calamity problems of their own, but should be congratulated for caring).

Here are the predominantly Muslim nations on the list:

Qatar, $25 million; Kuwait, $10 million; Saudi Arabia, $10 million; Algeria, $2 million; Bahrain, $2 million; Libya, $2 million; United Arab Emirates, $2 million; Turkey $1.25 million.

We can forgive Afghanistan and Iraq for their absence, for obvious reasons. But where is Iran? Egypt? Pakistan? Oman? Morocco? The oil-soaked sultanate of Brunei? Where are Jordan, Syria and Lebanon? And why are Bahrain, Kuwait and the Saudis such cheapskates when their spiritual brothers and sisters are dying by the tens of thousands?

Kuwait is a good case in point. Kuwait is running a $10 billion budget surplus, according to The New York Times, and recently distributed huge wads of cash – some $700 million – to its citizens, courtesy of a doubling of the price of oil.

Kuwaitis, being wealthy, do not like to get their hands dirty. They import tens of thousands of foreign workers – more than half of Kuwait’s population, many from Indonesia and India – to cook their meals, scrub their toilets, tend to their children and wax their Jaguars.

They are not heartless. A Kuwaiti newspaper reminded its citizens the other day that they should allow their domestic help to use the telephone to check back home to see if their families have been wiped out.

Gee, thanks, boss. May Allah, praised be his name, reward your boundless munificence.

A NY Times editorial says:

“For all of the invocations by Muslim leaders of the ummah, or the global community of believers, they typically do little to help their fellow Muslims in times of crisis. Arab leaders and their toothless talking shops like the Arab League and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference are excellent at denouncing problems in Palestine and Iraq, but most stood silent as a million died in the war between Iraq and Iran during the 1980s. When President Hafez al-Assad of Syria massacred some 20,000 people after an Islamist uprising in the city of Hama in 1982, there were no expressions of outrage from the Islamic Conference. Egypt routinely tortures political prisoners, untroubled by fears that other Arab leaders will seriously condemn such actions.”

According to Bergen, “Now the same pattern - action by Western countries and inertia from Muslim states - can be seen in the efforts to provide relief for those hardest hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami. While 100,000 of the victims are from Aceh, the most Islamic of Indonesia’s provinces, Muslim countries are contributing a relative pittance. Oil-rich Saudi Arabia is contributing the most: a paltry $30 million, about the same as what Netherlands is giving and less than one-tenth of the United States contribution. And no Arab governments participated in the conference in Jakarta on Thursday where major donors and aid organisations conferred over reconstruction efforts.”

Oh ffs who are the monkeys they hire to write this bull**** up?

Where is Iran? Has the author forgotten the earthquake in Iran last year, when $1 billion in aid was promised from the West but only $17 million has shown up?

What did the US do during the Iraq/ Iran war? SUPPLIED BOTH SIDES WITH WEAPONS so the killing could go on - is this somehow BETTER than standing silent???

The 20,000 dead in the Islamist uprising in Syria? Now how exactly is this any different from what the US has just done in Fallujah? And where was the US when Saddam was killing people in the 80's?

And Egypt routinely tortures prisoners... sure, they do... but then so does a certain OTHER country who secrets prisoners out to countries where torture is practised so as to subvert domestic and international laws against it.... and has the author completely had Abu Grayhib dislodged from their brain cells?

Jeez, the morons who write this bollocks should be fired for incompetence.

I understand that there is no love lost between the writers of these articles and Muslims. So their language is kind of annoying to us. But they are not altogether wrong.

I posted them not to make fun of anyone, but to analyze how much are they true.

I like to add one more thing

I think that we should learn from our mistakes. Rich Muslim countries in general did not contribute as much as they could have, if we compare it with Westerners. But not contributing enough does not mean that we do not care for our brothers. There could be many reasons for that. I can not speak on behalf of other Muslim countries, but I will write down what I think were the reasons Pakistanis did not contribute as much.

I think one of the reason many of these Westerners donated for the disaster is because of media. Their media has concentrated a lot on stories of tsunami, and has shown many personal stories. People who lost their homes, children who lost their whole family. It was all graphic. And a picture is worth a thousand words. I am sure anyone who saw those people must've been moved.

I am not sure how Pakistan media depicted this tragedy (no access to any Urdu channel), but considering the way Pakistani media has shows previous such tragedies, it looks like they did not show the human side of the story. Something which could touch people's hearts.

آنکھ اوجھل پهاڑ اوجھل (Aankh ojhal, pahaarr ojhal). If people are not kept on reminding of what has happened, they forget all about everything very soon.
