Spoilers for How I Met Your Mother:
I am so disappointed with this show right now. In 3 years, as in, 3 seasons, Ted is going to have a baby. Counting back, in sitcom terms, there's very little time with how the show is set up. Next season's finale will, probably, be Barney's wedding (I'll get to that in a second), where Ted will meet the mother, which leaves 2 seasons before the child is born. One finale is the baby being born, which means that the other will be the wedding. So, in 1 season Ted will go from meeting a girl to marrying her, which I foresee as a characher being forced down my throat like Quinn (I'll get to that too).
Of course, the show could just end with next season's finale, which would make sense. The show is called How I MET Your Mother, and he meets her at Barney's wedding, which will probably be next season's finale. But that sucks. 8 seasons of build-up only for it to end on when they meet? Surely the audience deserves to at least see them get married? To actually see this person interact with Ted, so we can actually get to know her.
If they do allow for that, then it's gonna be Quinn No. 2. A character that pops out of nowhere and with each episode gets hyped as this amazing being even though we barely see her. It's the writers telling me and not showing me. They try to make it seem legit by having Barney have a serious, perspective-shifting monologue every episode, in a bid to speed along his character ark so it makes sense, but all it does is create a character I don't care about, with the show gaining a forced feel to it. I got the same feeling with the British chick, it's like even the writers are aware that their forcing it, so the relatinships and plots don't have an authentic feel.
And what's worse? From the look of it, Quinn might not even marry Barney. Ted says the wedding goes horribly, but the bride is definitely Robin. So, this character that's been shoved down my throat winds up not even really mattering? And seriously? Robin? Do we have to a Ross and Rachel? See, Ross and Rachel spanned 10 seasons with courtship, relationship, break-up and relapse each getting enough build-up and distance between each other for it to feel right. Here, in the span of, I don't even know, 1-3 seasons they crammed all the Ross and Rachel turmoil and made it extra dramatic. The writers said that they think they struck the right balance of seriousness and comedy, but it seems that they think that seriousness equals character progression and story development and it doesn't.
Worse still? They don't even know what to do with the main character, Ted. They pulled a 'I've-been-in-love-with-Robin-this-whole-time' with no warning, and used it to keep him entertained for half a season. They didn't show any signs, nor did they show any aftermath, they just told us, with every episode having Ted or Robin say that they're not friends yet and it's awkward.
And now what? Victoria? Ugh. Robin pulls a pop psych analysis and says she must be the one, and Ted gets sucked in, they swerve it, and re-swerve. We KNOW this won't work out. Again, with Ted going to meet his wife in a season, they didn't have anything for him to do, so they brought her back.
Not to mention how every episode is now a gimmick episode, most of which were awful, worst of all the finale, where they decided to cash in on the defining trait of ther show, the flashbbacks, and just make it into a Family Guy-esque disaster. Not even good Family Guy, where they might pull a situation out of their ass but at least it was funny, this was just bad. Remember when Barney tripped on the banana and saved a woman's life as a result? Remember when we build up the door for the whole episode for a cheap joke? Remember when we made a poop joke?
And, lastly, and this has been true for a few seasons now but Robin's 'I birthed a cow' angle pushged it over the edge for me, the fact that every character is reduced to a character for no reason rather than for them to have a joke for them to reference for a scene.
That was long, but I had to write it down. Such a shame, the show had such good moments, but they've been past their peak for a while now and they need to step it up. I honestly can't see them saving this show no matter what route they go.
OH, and worst of all, Jason Segel isn't funny anymore. I love Jason Segel, **** this.
