and i think a major major point we need our best defender, either vidmar or neil on recoba and to definitely watcht he wings, because they just killed us int eh second half on the wings, even though we would be expecting a defensive style of play from them

Interesting, Uruguay should be feeling good about going into this. Hopefully a nice 5-0 kicks in though in our favour :)

Im prayin its so mate. It all depends on the crowd we get in Sydney. If we can get 85,000 people in there cherring us on, i think we can do this :lui:

I'm supporting the Aussies on this playoff, though I have nothing against Uruguay. It's quite sad to see Uruguay having to play the playoffs as I rate them much higher than Equador and Paraguay...

you had a really good post except this paragraph, the australian media and the public are not on any rampage to give Uruguay a bad reputation, so please just drop that line of attack on Australia, no one was shocked and no one expected rocket launchers or even anything close to that line of thinking.

But notice I put "Tabloids" and not the media. These were just papers that are ususally held in low regard in Australia (but some people in other boards seemed to be buying into). But im glad everything went well.

On the national anthem being booed. Common. That's so normal its not even funny. Australia will do the same and no Uruguayan will care (its part of the fun of things)

A few things from after the game.
1) Hiddink went to shake Fossati's hand and saw that he looked very weird (like exhausted). I think Fossati has been stressing way too much about the whole qualifier since last year.

2) Hiddink said he was dumb founded by Uruguay's defense and gave huge praise.

Not much else.....Uruguay will finally get all its starters back for wednesday (Regueiro <aka Recoba #2>, Lugano and Varela (+ probably De Los Santos from Valencia and maybe new forwards <V. Sanchez would be amazing I think>.

There seem to be something like 30,000 Uruguayans just in Sydney (or was it Australia?). But thousands upon thousands who couldnt get tickets have travelled from all over Australia and from all over the world to cheer on the National Team from OUTSIDE Sydney's stadium (hope with mega phones).

From an article i read 2 weeks ago, if they are not allowed to do that ,then they will just go downtown and watch the game aparently.

This game will be different than the one 4 years ago.
First off, in 2001, Uruguay was the better team before the thing was even played.
In the first leg, Australia barely created any chances and scored after an unecesary penalty.

But this time was different. Australia had been getting ready for Both Uruguay and Colombia for 4 years and studied every aspect of Uruguay in the last few months and got ready with a very good new national team that improved alot specifically for this game.

Plus they threw us one of the best coaches out there. I think that beating Australia convincingly (without many starters and w/out Forlan) is very good. (I cant believe how lucky we were that we didnt have to get Regueiro, lugano or varela tired and still got away with the win)
1-0 is what everyone wanted before the game. (better than 2-1 or 3-2 by far)

It's going to be tough. But like I said before, the diff was that last time there was no doubt that Uruguay could win at home by many goals (and it was hard enough too) cause Australia wasnt as good before.
But Uruguay isnt going to Australia as an inferior team by any means (more like and equal if not more).

Anyways good luck to both teams.

I thought Australia was playing in like a 120,000 stadium.

Vs. Chile (1-1) it was 100,000 (Very scary stadium)
Vs. Brazil (1-1 in 2001) it was like 160,000 (Maracana) <if not more>
Vs. Argentian 90,000
Vs Ecuador like 40- 50,000 (0-0)

Im glad our players are used to that sort of pressure. But if Australia wins, its cause of their players and not so much the ppl. (which will make it deserving)

Another note about the game. I remembered that Uruguay was tryign to get 0 yellow cards to not have any banned players in Australia.

So for the Aussies who said "Uruguay played dirty" .....that was us trying NOT to foul :p (Now that I think about it, Uruguay did look like they were holding back a bit)

But they dont have to do that anymore on Wednesday thank god. If we cant get a good result in Australia, then we dont deserve to play in the world cup, simple as that.

It use to hold 110,000, for the Olympics, but we removed the top end tiers, added more a roof and now have retractable seats to bring fans closer to the action in football codes.

It now holds 83,500.

very nice stadium (Y) <its 1000x better than the Skydome here in Canada :( )

I think the fans are going to be way different though. A guy on bigsoccer.com board said that the difference would be seen in that the Aussies dont really take to football at heart (or even chant the same way as football nations)

Take this for example. In Sydney most fans will prob just hiss and scream (like any world stadium) while sitting down on their chairs.

Yesturday I read somewhere on Latino.espn.com that when Uruguay scored and all 70,000 people started to jump up and down singing a typicial football song, Thompson said that he almost had a heart attack (felt like the stadium was going to crash down on them).

I think that's going to be a factor in the game on wednesday. If it was like Argentina (Where you have 90,000 ppl doing that), then there probably wouldnt be enough of Uruguay to scrape off the field by the end of the game.

PS- Australia is just like here in Canada it seems. Fans are way too laid back and getting up for 2 seconds to cheer is seen as "extreme" enthusiasm. (Like me...i went to the Raptors game on friday and I dont think the Utah Jazz even felt being away. Yet I think a 2nd Division Argentine team could probably give them a run for their money with a stadium that is jumping up and down like that.......just scary :o )

The majority are pasion. Doesnt mean they arent involved in the game its just the culture here in NRL and AFL is to watch and not sing (however, there are those who dont like that and will chant).

I cant bring myself to tip either way...

This game means more to the sport in this country than most people from overseas will struggle to understand...

83,000 will be the biggest crowd ive ever been apart of, in football terms, in Australia..

My stomach has been churning since last Monday, and Sundays' loss has just made it worse. Win or lose.. lets just get it over and done with so i can go back to leading a normaly life :)

Go the socceroos! Go you good things! Make me proud!
