Ok, some questions:
I understand they were using human blood to fertilize the red roots or whatever, what were the red roots :$
And also, the aliens "died" because of our germs, but how did the tripod's forcefields go down? Our germs wouldn't affected them.

meh, I'd give it a 4/5 as well

there were serious loop holes in the movie. Maybe because the director assumes that the viewers would have read the book.

I didn't get how it ended. Morgan freeman, though a good narrator, didn't really explain what killed the aliens.

Secondly, how did Ray's son survived, when he walked dead ahead into the explosions? Mystery.

Thirdly, why wasn't there a mothership, because the 'drivers' came through ligthening, so how did they end up in the atmosphere.

Also, once the EMS waves hit, how was Ray able to drive!!!

Overall.. I think it was a disappointment from a story-line point of view. The graphics were awesome, but fall apart due to the huge gap of communication.

I think the red roots were the blood in fertilizing mode. they weren't just suycking our blood and spreading it in the ground just like that. it probably got mixed with something they had.

and about the Aliens dying, I dont think it was our germs that killed them, I understood that it was Nature as a whole (germs being part of it).

and about the narrator, I think the movie works so great because is the story of a man and his family (but mostly his daughter, that's why the son wasn't played by Orlando Bloom for example IMO) surviving an Alien attack, not a movie about an Alien invasion. And so everything is shown from their point of view, and we see ONLY what they see.
so when the narrator says that it was nature, its like a gift we get to know a little bit of what happened, because that all Ray and his family probably know. Same for the son, we (nor Ray) saw him die, so Im sure he's going to be telling his father the stories and all that.
and try to imagine an ending where they come back and the son never appears again, and he has to explain his ex-wife that he let him go into an Alien attack. book or movie, it would've been a huge downer of an ending ;)

we talked about this already (see first pages) so no need to get back on that.

and ngyc, the ending. [SPOILERS] I dont know if I was expecting him to be dead, but I did want to know what happened to him. and what happened in the movie is what happened in the book, so if they would've changed it then the complaints would've be a lot more ;)

yeh i know, i saw the film and if it had been a film not based on the book it would have worked quite well, there was a tad bit of underlying - "god bless america" going on but it speilberg so i'm going to complain. Based on the book its a complete betrayl but thats been said before.

quite enjoyable it was depite that but Cruise pisses me off so much its hard to like any film hes in (except rain man)

It was germs man.

Listen to what he says at the end of the film, and just to contradic the 'nature as a whole' theory, If it were nature as a whole, then how could the aliens have come billions of years ago to our planet breathed in our air, planted the spaceships in our ground and left... not to be sick, only to return billions of years later and get sick... by nature? Of course it is germes. Humans created them, without humans germs wouldn't exist, and because of this, the aliens became sick.

We are immune, they are not... that's how they were killed.

It really wasnt that great.

"Signs" pulled off the alien thing better. Good special effects. Lame story. Family tries to escape from the aliens, gets split up, aliens die from germs, family gets back together.

Sorry i haven't read much of the thread, but this is the same story as that musical one right?

Like i care what some douchebag says.

If he was smart, he would do the same thing with War of the Worlds because it had an even lamer plot.

well, the thing is that is based on a classic book and so its like saying that HG Wells' book was lame when its a masterpiece.

True that.

Signs was better anyway, IMO. More believable anyway, even though it is aobut aliens, there was really no 'HERO' in it like Tom Cruise and his explosives in WOTW... And how did Robbie get back to Boston. And why wasn't Boston touched by anyone? And how did that cam corder work at the start of the film if no electricty worked? And how did Tom Cruise drive through the highway if all the cars stopped working... wouldn't it be packed?... And considering the aliens had planted those things in the earth 1 million years ago you would think that in that amount of time they would have forgotten how to use them, if not advanced to something a lot more deadly and just left them there and invaded us with something else. it was still enjoyable to watch anyway, even though it's full of flaws. Signs has less flaws....

I still hate it how people say "why would the aliens come here if they were alergic to such and such".... well that's easy, THEY DIDNT KNOW BEFORE THEY CAME.

They are both good films I though, WOTW was really fun to watch and Signs came together fantastically.

I saw this movie yesterday, it was superb. It was a really great movie. There are a few minor discrepancies - ie; the car thing, the videocamera thing, a few that I've forgotten. Dakota Fanning is on top of the world isn't she? She's in a hundred movies, everyone wants her in their movie.

There are a few questions I have - like what actually killed the aliens? I read someone said germs.. but they've been planning this for a million years... SURELY they would've been meticulous in their planning. And yeah, where did the aliens come from, wouldn't there have been a mothership or something..

Signs is another story. Water, the most abundant substance on this entire planet, which they supposedly want themselves, is their one fatal weakness..

To sum it up, great movie!

They weren't nescessarily planning it for a million years, that's just what Tim Robbins believed. I think they just placed the tripods under for when they needed our resources or whatever.
We didn't see any mothership because the whole movie is seen from the point of view of the family, all we got was they came down in the 'lightning.'

watched this yesterday... average

good special effects and stuff, but the plot was kinda etchy

the only reason I understood what happened in the end was that I had a question regarding the movie on one of my biology tests that gave away the ending... so if it wasn't for that test, I'd be hella confused at the end of the movie. also, the movie didn't leave much to the imagination, the spaceships and stuff just came out and started attacking 20 minutes into the movie :(

SPOILER ALERT

how the hell did the van survive all those huge ass blasts when they went to his wife's house? :| and how did Robbie live after those blasts? one thing the movie lacked was elaboration on some of the occurences

it was a test on the immune system and ****... it said something along the lines of "In the 1959 (or whenever) novel and soon-to-be movie, War of the Worlds, the alien invaders are defeated when bacteria and other micro-organisms enter their body. Based on how the immune system works, is this a feasible storyline?" or summit
