Congrats to Italy. You fully deserved it in penalties with your nerves even though you were clearly outplayed even with France's 10 players at the end of extra time. Just something, the fourth official, Cantajelo(sp?) was the one that saw the Zidane incident on video replay and told the assistant referee about it. Cantajelo, being Spanish, whom lost to France in the Round of 16, also refereed the game in which he awarded Italy a late spot-kick to send them on their way. Is this highly coincidental? I mean Zidane deserved his red card fully, but without Cantajelo's observance of that video replay, Zidane might have went unpunished.

Zidane unpunished in a WC final with such an evident unfair conduct? I think the fourth man, wheter he was spanish or something else, simply couldn't close an eye on that grave fact.
The very unexplainable thing is different: how can FIFA vote Zidane "man of the WC" after such a violent act! A champion isn't a champion doing such awful things... :alex:

His team never won so how can he be a champion, unless your reference is to France 98.

Someone on another messageboard said Materazzi swore at Zidane in Arabic. Maybe that's what cracked Zidane since he's not even Arab
Its like when someone calls a Scot a dirty English mofo.

So Materazzi knows Arabic? How? And Zidane doesn't even understand him, since he is not Arabic, yet he runs berserk?

Doesn't make much sense to me.

when you are in a football stadium, you look at the ball, not at zidane...
mate of mine was in berlin...he didn´t see it either..
called me moments after zidane got redcarded, because he didn´t know why...

He (Blatter) was on the stage. You must have missed him.

No no:

Berlin - One person was conspicuous by his absence from the podium when Italy's players received their winners' medals and German President Horst Koehler handed their captain Fabio Cannavaro the World Cup.
The president of football's world controlling body Fifa Sepp Blatter was not amongst the host of dignitaries present at the award ceremony after the dramatic 5-3 penalty shootout win over France.
The president of the local organising committee Franz Beckenbauer was there as was the president of Europe's controlling body Uefa, Lennart Johansson, but there was no sign of Blatter.
Beckenbauer in fact presented the medals to the Italians, while the players grabbed the trophy after it was handed over by the German president.
But in all of this Blatter was missing - as he was when the runners-up received their medals from Beckenbauer.
A spokesperson for the local organising committee said that as far as he knew, Blatter was going to be present when the cup was handed over.
"I have no idea why he was not there," he said. "This morning we were given the programme and he was mentioned. I do notknow why this changed."
Fifa spokesperson Andreas Herren said that Blatter had decided on the spur of the moment that he would not be present on the podium for the presentation.
"There is nothing in the rules about it, so the president could quite comfortably stay behind," he said.
In the run-up to the tournament Fifa and the German organising committee had been involved in a controversy over the list of speakers at the opening, with Fifa being accused of wanting to prevent Beckenbauer from speaking.
Blatter has not always been popular amongst German football fans and last year was booed in the stadiums during the Confederations Cup. - Sapa-dpa

I don't know what Materazzi said, i'm just mentioning something i read on another forum.

Its not like Materazzi needs to know much Arabic to know how to diss Zidane, i bet half the kids in your school can cuss in at least 4 or 5 different languages, but they'd probably struggle to locate the countries the languages are from on a map. And Zidane may not be Arab but he's from a country where the majority are, and he grew up in Marseilles, in the neighbourhoods with the biggest concentration of North African immigrants in France. I'm sure he can still remember a few good Arabic swear words from here and there.

Whatever they said they said it in italian, no need to use arabic, Zidane knows and speaks italian as he played many years in Italy.

I have to disagree with you because it was Zidane's last game. I'm sure atleast 20% of the people in the stadium kept looking at what magic Zidane would bring in the dying minutes before the penalty shootout.

First off, Bravo France for a well played game. Despite some of the ugliness in the midst of the game, France showed they were just as good as any team in the world.

Not that I mean to be an a-hole about it but,Trez's miss means he has blown two of the biggest pk's of his career (the second being the champion's league final 2003). Of course his golden goal in 2000 makes up for some of that.

Was anyone else surprised to see some of Lippi's choices for the shoot-out. Shows how much faith he has in Iaquinta. A forward with the freshest legs on the field gets passed over for none other than the likes of Matrix. Why bring him on in the first place? Especially with Gila on the bench.

About the whole Zidane headbutt business, it's just a real shame. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Marco was being completely c*nterrific to him all game but there is no excuse for that kind of outburst. The real bitch is that the poor bastard's never going to be able to do anything to erase it from our memories or his legacy.

eh? It's not like it was a testimonial match or anything, it was the World Cup final! Why would you look to Zidane when the ball is in the other half, after him doing not much for 115 mins? People paid lots of money to be there, I would feel really bad if I missed a crucial goal or a fantastic save to see Zidane walk back to the half way line...
