I may not like Mutu either since he's Dinamo fans' wet dream, though that doesn't mean you've got to underestimate what he did as a player. he may not be able to integrate at bigger clubs (Chelsea, Juve) but that's just his character, can't do nothing about it. he still is a really good player on his day, and he did admirably in solving his problems and regaining his status.

Yes that's not biased by any means!
Admittedly Benfica has not been having the success it used to have in the field, but we still are the best selling brand in Portugal (at club level clearly) and Benfica still is a prestigious brand not only in Portugal, but a little bit throughout the world. Getting the club organized and paying debts of ex-presidents, correcting what they did isn't immediate, but slowly we're getting better and hopefuly we will improve in next years in the sportive results as well.

On-topic, Adu didn't have much playing time in either Benfica or Monaco, I don't think he ever started a match for us in the league.
But I do believe he has some potential in him, not as much as it was hyped though. And the new coach Jorge Jesus has stated he wants Adu to start the pre-season and I'm personally looking forward to what he can show.
Sadly I think it's part of the game to overhype young players, look at Argentina, any youngster who was semi decent was hailed as the "new Maradonna" - Case in point is Ariel Ortega, he was an excellent player but didn't reach the "Maradonna" class.
I think the whole thing is that America yearns to have a world class player, so that they can use that to get fans into the game. Look at how Landon Donovan was hyped - same with Adu. He will get better with age and maturity, but he was never going to be "The American Pele" that was claimed. Manchester United actually took him for a 3 week trial and decided he wasn't up to snuff - that in itself should tell you something.
It was the same with Kerlon in Brazil, and now with Douglas Costa. You give a player the Pele or Maradonna badge when they have proved themselves at the highest level. Of course now with Youtube, fans can see short snippets of skills and believe they're looking at the "next big thing" I remember Anderson was hailed as the "New Ronaldinho"
It's like people who hailed the emergence of Nani as "The new Ronaldo". Perhaps if these players were allowed to be themselves and not get crushed under the expectation of overhyping - then maybe they would fulfill their potential.
In anycase, Benfica isn't exactly the backwaters of obscurity is it? Regular UCL football and a high profile.
If Adu has the class, then he will emerge.

I think the integration part is just a matter of getting adapted to be honest. he's used with the whole team depending on him (national team, Parma, Fiorentina, etc) so when he moves to a club with stars alongside him he's the one who has to fit in. Henry faced this problem in his first season at Barcelona and eventually did well, Kezman too when he left PSV (though he has went downside eversince and shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath with Titi) and so on.
anyway, getting back to the thread. I think Adu can end up a pretty good player if he has enough time to adapt with a new country and club. a season isn't enough for a 20year-old switching continents to adapt, however I think he can do well with Benfica. as someone said before, there's a title challenge and even a CL participation at stake for him so it's not like he ended up with some average team. he should be able to do well and develop.

Massive, you made the wrong view of my post. You never insulted me, i was just joking, because Fili and you are Porto supporters and we know that Benfica and Porto have a "love" relationship with eachother.
Benfica isn't only the Europe titles, but in the league too. N. Forest won 2 cl too but, in the league it wasn't the same. I think i dont need to talk about the history of Benfica. I know that in the present it isn't a "TOP" club, but belongs to the group of the most sucessful clubs ever. we need to improve a lot to get back to that times and i know and i said before that Porto is a Beast in the field.
About Adu, he will make the pre.season, hope to see him in the squad, when he was here in the few games he made he scored so...
