Back on topic (again): I think his time at DC actually hampered his development. He was pushed into playing against defenders who were too big for him at the time. If he'd been in Europe, he'd have been on a youth development team, there's not a chance he'd have played first team or even reserve team football at 14. Likewise, all the hype got to his head a little bit, I remember him complaining about not getting playing time, and I think that hurt his development too.
That said, I haven't seen him since he moved, and I'd like to see how he's doing. I wish he'd gotten a chance at the confed cup, but oh well.

He doesn't see playing time on the USMNT because Bob Bradley is an idiot... You don't know how many times the fans are calling for adu and yet bob continues to go to his love child Sasha and we continue to see him lose the ball after the second and third touch. Notice what Adu did recently against Argentina and Spain friendlies. Adu doesn't fit in Bob's get a goal and bunker down mentality.... Its stupid. You don't know how many times Adu could of been used... Spain and Brazil games Adu could of been used for his pace and passing to get the ball out of our 1/3. Most hyped thanks to the media. He never said anything about being the best in the world. He just continue his futbol career slowly even if he was getting popular without playing for a decent team at the time. The kid is still 20 he's not even considered an adult yet. He's going to progress now and with Benfica its a good starting club to build your career in Europe. Your a tool, and so is Bradley.

Sadly I think it's part of the game to overhype young players, look at Argentina, any youngster who was semi decent was hailed as the "new Maradonna" - Case in point is Ariel Ortega, he was an excellent player but didn't reach the "Maradonna" class.
I think the whole thing is that America yearns to have a world class player, so that they can use that to get fans into the game. Look at how Landon Donovan was hyped - same with Adu. He will get better with age and maturity, but he was never going to be "The American Pele" that was claimed. Manchester United actually took him for a 3 week trial and decided he wasn't up to snuff - that in itself should tell you something.
It was the same with Kerlon in Brazil, and now with Douglas Costa. You give a player the Pele or Maradonna badge when they have proved themselves at the highest level. Of course now with Youtube, fans can see short snippets of skills and believe they're looking at the "next big thing" I remember Anderson was hailed as the "New Ronaldinho"
It's like people who hailed the emergence of Nani as "The new Ronaldo". Perhaps if these players were allowed to be themselves and not get crushed under the expectation of overhyping - then maybe they would fulfill their potential.
In anycase, Benfica isn't exactly the backwaters of obscurity is it? Regular UCL football and a high profile.
