Are you kidding me? I still remember in a Juve CL match back in around 2000 in the CL he headbutted some German team(Hamburg?) player and got sent off. Then there was the stamping on that Saudi guy in '98 for absolutely no reason. Zidane does have a mean side to him, although it's usually when things don't go his way. Whatever Materazzi said to him, it doesn't excuse the headbutt. Yes, it would piss me off, too. But I'm not being paid millions and I'm not an ambassador of world football. As such, I don't have a greater responsibility of professionalism.

I remember that stomp vividly now, group stages of the '98 WC. He really did hit Fuad Amin hard on that one. :X

Sad though, he's such a talented player.

hes had outbursts a couple of times in his career. but Ronaldinho head-butted a guy last year, who still remembers that? no-one, because if youre an extra-ordinary player, alot of stuff is forgiven. same will be with this incident.
ronnie's was not at the end of his career and during his final world cup match in front of billions of people watching the world cup final.

It was brilliant.

How many people can say that on the last day on the job they headbutted someone and then left never to return again?

Genuis.

if anything, that made Zidane even more nervous. who the f*ck gives a sh*t, the guy got pissed off, alot of us can say we'd control ourselves in that situation, but the goddamn fact is, we'll never play 110 minutes running like mad in a WC final, and we'll never get insulted by a retarded Materazzi during that...

Please, the man practically lives on the big stage. I'm not buying the whole nerves BS. I hope people never forget this, same goes for any player who's a worldwide role model. Control your f*cking self.

If Zidane would have had balls he would have headbutted Materazzi, say to the ref that his (ref's) wife was top notch last night, applauded the fans, and eventually run away with the trophy.

Now really, a professional player shouldn't react like that any thing in the world an opponent would say to him - including the wife thing.

Goldberg would've been mighty proud of that head charge :)

It would. Zidane would become a football God. (H)

Do I really have to dig up the Zidane thread where I was basically abused and cast off as a lunatic for saying Zidane is a thug when things don't go his way and he shrinks under pressure more often than he rises to it? Because this was the absolute dumbest move I have ever seen in my life.

And you know what, I would almost go so far as to say that Materazzi didn't say anything big to Zidane.

When Zidane hit that header in ET that Buffon saved, I turned to my friend next to me and said "if he made that, I would have taken back everything bad I've ever said about Zidane" and then he cost his team the World Cup Final because he's a dumbass dirty cheating piece of garbage, and he reinforced everything a hundred times over.

You honestly don't think Italy got a moral lift and France got a little downhearted after seeing the French captain be a dumbass and get sent off for no reason at all? Of course they did.

Firstly, unless Zidane was going to cause France to score in the last 10 minutes, which seems unlikely, him being sent off did not certainly have any impact on the way the game turned out. Trezeguet would still have had to take a penalty. Obviously it could have turned out differently but really he hardly cost them the world cup. Especially considering he scored the earlier penalty and without him they wouldn't have got to the final in the first place, nor won the world cup in '98. I still love Zidane, and if I were French I would still love Zidane. He is a legendary player. Sure he shouldn't have done it but I can't help but admire the quality of the headbutt too. I am going to buy a Zidane shirt.

Yes, it was stupid

Yes, he clearly lost his cool as he has at other times in the past

Yes, he could have, but didnt, cost his team the game with that move (scoring 3/4 pens it cant be said that they were "out of it" mentally)

But this moment will never diminsh what Zidane has accomplished for football and his country. And people claiming this will be the lasting memory of his career should think of Diego Maradonna. Chances are the first thing that comes to mind is an amazing career rather than a handball.

I'd put money that Materazzi said something racist/anti-muslim or something to him.

I was sad for Zizou to go out like that, but atleast he did it to the dirtiest c*nt on the soccer world.

Amen. If he had to do it to anyone, im glad it was that son of a bitch

The morale thing is true, indeed. But saying Zidane cost France the WC is pure exaggeration. He was one of their best players on the pitch plus he scored their goal. Not his fault Trezeguet cant take a penalty to save his life.

And yes, even if Zidane was on the pitch, Trezeguet would take penalties.

I don't think people are referring to the "hand of God" goal as being the bad part about Maradona, I think the cocaine and getting sent home from WC 94 is the downfall of his legacy. And you know what? I do think of him being a coke head every time I hear Maradona's name.

First of all, you werent cast off at all. You were disagreeed with by many

Secondly, how does this event turn him into
a dumbass dirty cheating piece of garbage, and he reinforced everything a hundred times over.
yeah hes done it before, but so what? If he hasnt gotten an reputation for it, there is reason for that

He didnt shrink under pressure. He had a brilliant game, as was his tournament, and this was a purely indefensible, braindead move.

Why would you go as far as to assume what he said to him? Materazzi was talking to him for a good five seconds before he knocked him over.

Dude, I know I had this out with you before, but cmon, youre using this as an excuse to diminsh what he has accomplished, which remains immense. If Barthez still had any lift in his legs, they might just have won that shootout. Its not like they choked, exactly.
