You have the ability to take a part of the argument and convert into a "whole", i admire you.

Can't wait to see Lamela in this team, he can break defenses dribbling and Roma doesn't have many good players at 1-on-1 situations. Only if Ménez had stayed...

had the match recorded, and running in the background while I did some work late last night ...

for the second match running, Kjær makes a goal-saving block with the keeper beaten ... he didn't have the best of games, but his reading of the game and his positioning is still clutch ...

and I'm still loving De Rossi's libero role, dropping deep from DM to play sweeper, and then pushing up with the attack ... amazing youth product; DiBenedetto and his lawyers need to pull out all the stops to get Daniele's contract extension sewn up ...

Osvaldo finally got a goal, albeit just a tap-in ... I don't like Borriello, but he deserves the credit for laying that up on a platter ... in fact, he put in quite a bit of hard running for the team, which is commendable ...

the passing and movement is getting there ... Miki Pjanić looks classy, but he's not really been making the killer passes a creative outlet needs to ... I think the forwards' lack of positive mobility takes part of the blame, but so does Pjanić ...

but it seems more of a matter of time before everyone gets in tune with each other's movement, and can finally convert all the ball possession to chances, and goals ...

The Von Trapps
^ he got a little lucky with the control, but yeah, it should do his confidence a lot of good ... the ball to find him from De Rossi was the brilliant part of that goal ...

Osvaldo on the scoresheet again, this time with some slick skill ... but again, he should have had more than one (wasted an easier chance when put through by Totti) ...

could have been a nervy climax once it became 2-1, but some wonderful interplay between Pjanić and Simplicio sealed those important 3 points ...

Atalanta were the most in-form team in the league, so this is a solid win for Roma ... one step at a time for Lucho's brigade
...

Has Pizarro not fully recovered from injury? Why is he not a definite starter in a squad with a ball-retention philosophy?

Perotta was playing RAM ... but when Totti is fit, it should be Osvaldo-Totti-Bojan up front ...

Pizarro is competing for a central spot, but slows the game down a little too much ... Gago is the better choice there, especially with Pjanić in front of him ...

I'd swap Gago and De Rossi positions, Gago is more an static player than De Rossi which is more energetic and dynamic with a better eye for score goals.

Never really thought Perotta was that good even when he was in that Italy squad in 2006. TBH I'm stunned that he's still playing at 34. Figured he'd be crap by now like Camoranesi (another member of that team I didn't rate). For the record, I don't dislike them because they're Italian, I appreciate many skillful and talented Italian players. Those two (plus Iaquinta) just always left me baffled at how they kept playing when they weren't good enough.

@Arnau: the system is not a problem ... De Rossi is incredible that modern libero role! he freely moves forward, and drops deep to make crucial tackles and collect the ball ... Gago lends the added ballwinning abilities in the middle, which will be perfect once Miki Pjanić settles into calcio, and starts providing more goals ...

Every time I've seen Pizarro play he's shown a lot of vision, great passing technique and swiftness in possession. He's also quite solid defenisively, it so I really don't see what Gago offers that Pizarro doesn't improve upon (other than ball-winning, although still, with De Rossi there you don't need a holder), other than durability and energy.

EDIT: I've only seen one Roma match this season, but it just sounds like Pizarro fits the Libero role more than De Rossi. De Rossi should stick to midfield and provide his energy to go forward as well as defend, and Pizarro should come deep and collect the ball and dictate play from the back.

I think you're wrong. For all the flash that we associate with the libero, there have only been a couple players to actually do it well. That's because the first priority is, and remains, being a defender. You have to be not only technically astute, physically strong, quick, and a positioning genius, but you also have to be a top defender in its own right. If I had to mold any modern player into a libero, De Rossi would probably be in my top 5, maybe 1 or 2 if I really gave it thought. Pizarro I wouldn't consider.

I don't think De Rossi is actually playing as a libero, though, is he? From my understanding he's been playing in a Busquets-role variant, and Pizarro fits the Busquets role very well. When I said Libero role, I meant Roma's Libero role, not the old-school sweeper role.

The Von Trapps
Shifty's spot-on when he says the libero is a defender first ...

in Lucho's system, De Rossi either sits as an anchor in front of the back 2, or drops deep into that sweeper hole ... the term 'modern libero' applies coz it is the contemporary iteration of the historically evolving defensive free-role position ...

Not arguing that a Libero is a defender first, just not sure that De Rossi is playing as an actual libero. From what I've seen, heard and read, he drops into the defense in possession more so than in defense. Today, for example, he tracked Hernanes more so than play between the centrebacks.

The Libero's starting position was in defense and he would move forward to join the attack, not the other way arond, wherein he drops back to help with ball distribution from the defense and allow the fullbacks to attack freely. In the latter, which is basically the Busquets role that Barca employ, I think Roma should use Pizarro or Gago. Play De Rossi in a typical midfield role, which I feel is a better use of both of their abilities.

Xifio

The Von Trapps
Barça play a much higher line than Roma, so Sergio B. doesn't usually have too far to go from midfield to be behind the defensive line ... De Rossi meanwhile, is often the deepest defensive player, sweeping behind the centrebacks in the box ... he does start from the anchor role, so your comparison isn't completely invalid; but if one understands the etymology of the word 'libero', one would understand why I insist on calling his role for Roma the 'modern libero' ...
