Tell me that wouldn't be awesome. Could also play the shuttlers deeper and move the DM to a roaming No. 10 who would move laterally. Someone try this shit out.

BTW, Beckenbauer (Libero), Breitner (LB ), Wimmer and Overath (Midfielders) played this way

If you could draft any players you wanted right now but had to use this concept, who would you pick to create a functional side that brings out the most of the role?

Here's what I've come up with:

For the false 9 role I dunno who else you could play there. It needs to be someone good with the ball who can also defend. Rooney is the only who came to mind. Fellaini would function well as a CB, I've already commented on how I think he could be a Libero, although he's not as good on the ball for the role, he could work as a sort of target man up top as well. Thought Pirlo would work well here, but figured that if I used him with Rooney the defense would be too exposed and that with Fellaini it made more sense to use a roaming No. 10.

Vertonghen and Ivanovic were my CB choices because they can also play as fullbacks and are good on the ball. Chiellini, Hummels, David Luiz, Pique, Puyol and lots of others, especially those used to a 3-man defense, would work well too.

At wingback I couldn't think of the perfect player they need the energy and industry of wingback but be good coming inside. Best that came to mind were Alba and Milner. Others I thought about were Maggio, Lichtensteiner, Asamoah, Bale, Kolarov, Filipe Luis, but the former two are probably the best out of those guys at coming inside. Lahm would work well, too.

In midfield good runners so Yaya, Marchisio and Vidal were my choices. Lots of others would work too: Ramires, Benders, Khedira, Fernandinho, Schweinsteiger and any good MC, although I went with players who are good at popping up in the box mostly. Martinez gave the most secure feeling as someone who is good in midfield but who can also fill in at CB when needed.

Ribery and Bale to start inside and move wide, actually had a hard time thinking of a great player who does this. Sure, Ozil and the likes move to the flanks, but they create overloads and combinations, they do not move wide to stay wide on their own. If playing an AMC then Gotze, Ozil, Cazorla, Mata, Hazard, Muller, basically guys who move around the create overloads seems like the best choice.

Didn't think keeper would be relevant but I'm sure someone like Arnau would have someone specific in mind for this.

Thoughts?

You're also overrating Fellaini skills. Cesc could do that role.

As CBs i'd pick Thiago Silva and Marquinhos.

All women are bitches until proven otherwise

EDIT: I remember a Roma save in FM last year playing this way:

Totti get mad for playing in a rare position, what a twat.

Why would you play Totti or Cesc there? They'll play upfield a lot but they still need to be able to get some shifts in defense. Fellaini is much better for this role than they are. That said, there's a reason why if he's playing the role Gotze or Pirlo are in there, because his role wouldn't be about creation.

I acknowledged that he's not good enough. The question was less about assembling the best squad, and more about the squad with the qualities that best fit the tactic. Also, Milner has been having a good year and is currently a starter, with Mancini having realised that Silva and Nasri don't work together. SBNation's City blog are big on statistics and several times have compiled research about how the team performs better with him on the field. Milner's role is similar to Pedro's in Barca in the sense that as a player he is much less talented than others, but enables the team to play better and does the job he needs to do well.

I'm not saying Milner is world-class, not at all, but he's not crap, not at all.

Considering that in this case you want someone capable of playing wingback but who will come inside, the typicaL wingbacks like Maggio and Lichtsteiner are players who stay wide, so do not work. The other ones I had in mind are Isla and Iraola who have played the role in the past, but are they really an improvement over Milner? It's debatable.
