Group D: Sweden vs. Spain [R]

Strange match all and all.

The ref:
He made some mistakes - a clear penalty, ending the first half in the middle of an attack, and there was a handball by a Swede in the penalty area too, so that's two penalties.

Spain:
They played good for the first 20 minutes or so. Then Puyol got injured, and Spain started to draw back with their huge 1-0 lead. It cost them, with a little help of Ramos's miserable game (for his standards, at least) and Casillas's mistake (he lets 1/10 of those in, max). After that it got weird. Spain tried to attack, but couldn't do much - they didn't even try to counter attack, just passed the ball in the midfield. When they got the ball in the box, they lacked confidence, creativity and finishing.

Torres looked so lost for most of the match. He got balls sent to him from almost every angle, but when he got the ball, he couldn't get pass the defenders, he gave too long passes for himself and his shots lacked power and accuracy. Also, after watching him more closely, he didn't do much to help in the defending; just a couple of times after he lost the ball he started running to get the ball back, but he seemed very frustrated when he did that, and seemed like he was close to hurting the opposition, getting carded.

Also, the defence was very shaky, as Ramos was having a bad match, and Albiol looked really nervous after coming in for Puyol.

The midfield lacked major creativity, the subs helped it a little, but not enough. The start of the attacks was still too slow and they didn't take risks in their passing, just moving the ball around to the next guy.

Finally, Spain got lucky with a long pass and the Sweden's defenders dozed off for a sec. That's all you need to give to a striker like Villa - he'll be invisible for the whole match, and then -BANG! In a flash, he runs past you and puts the ball in to the net.

Sweden:
They played a good first half, but when Zlatan was subbed off (his knee problems, apparently), they looked pretty shady. They didn't try to do much to win the match. They were clearly counting on getting a counte attack after Spain's pressure. They got really only one good chance in the second half, where Henke was just a little late, and couldn't reach the ball. From that point on, they seemed to pretty much have settled for the draw, and we all know what happens when you do that. You fall asleep for a second, waiting for the final whistle, and get punished.

Wow, a rare long post for me. Not that it makes a difference, nobody probably reads this anyway. (H)

the plus side is that he can rest next weeks game, or play only half a game. So he can be fresh against Italy or Romania. Either of which will be Spains biggest game
...or France.

On that note, anything but a victory for Greece tonight guarantees Spain first place in the group. God knows we don't want to face the Dutch in quarterfinals.

well think about this Help...this is the worst I have ever seen him play, so if this is the worst the best is yet to come...at least I hope

He showed some great speed and decent attacking dribbles 2-3 times tonight, so i'm not too quick to judge him overall. But like you said, in a tournament like this, he's got to do better.

I read it (Y)

Pretty good analysis, though I think you were a bit hard on Torres. In the past I've been extremely critical of him, but I think his move to the premiership really straightened him out. His goal was not easy, and he really only blew one opportunity (when Villa gave him la pase de la muerte). Aside from that, the Swedes were just very hard to get past. I must also say that when Villa did receive the ball, he always did something useful with it, though he may have been "invisible" for most of the match.

Another thing I never thought I'd say: Thank God for Marchena! After Puyol left, he was the only defender out there that inspired any confidence. It's worrisome the depth we lack on defense. If Javi Navarro hadn't had knee surgery, he would have been our defensive star by these standards.

Yes, he was flashy a couple of times, as he was last match, but that does not make up for the amount of posession he gave away, and after attacking he has been slow to get back (as on Sweden's goal).

It was funny to see Marchena shout at the Swedes after diving. You can see that in Villa's goal. The attacker dove, but the free kick wasn't given and Capdevila sent the ball to Villa, while Marchena was signing the attacker like "Get up, ffs!"

On Villa, I didn't mean he played badly, he was very creative and made the defenders work, but to the odd eye, he was pretty invisible.

Torres - Yeah, he just blew on opportunity, but that wasn't what I critcized him about. The thing was, he couldn't create the opportunities. He got the ball, and gave it away, trying to run the defenders down.

Yup exactly. He showed a few signs of a great attack for a defender, but overall he was one of the worst spanish players on the field today.

Congrats to our "neighbors" Los Hermanos (H), the first half was even and the second half was pretty boring because Sweden started to defend all the time.

The goal is the last minute is a deserved punishment to Sweden, even though they were defending quite well and not wasting time.

It would be great to see a Portugal vs. Spain final...keep dreaming..(H)

Torres eh?

Well.........in the first 5 or so minutes of the game, he (yes, he....Fernando Torres) was running by Swedish defenders 2 or 3 at a time. Didn't you see him cut in down the right wing after getting past 2 defenders in one ****ing gorgeous move inside the box to CREATE a chance? He did that a few times at the start of the game and really gave the defenders a torrid time. Guess you missed that.

OK, no matter......after 14 minutes, as required, he gets his goal. Now, at this stage of the game, you have to realize that he is not going to get past defenders for the entire game, thereby CREATING chances, since, well, that is not his role.....AU CONTRAIRE, THAT is the role of one Francesc Fabregas, who was warming his A** on the bench!!! Torres shouldn't be expected to CREATE CHANCES on a team that has a player like that on it and can serve as that link between Torres/Villa and the rest of the midfield......Fabregas on the bench---> chances NOT CREATED...strikers come off as being rubbish.

Now, the other thing is that the Spanish midfield is not as strong as you think WITHOUT Fabregas. And you can't expect to play him for 30 minutes and think that he will turn on the charm, so to speak....he needs to start(not come on after an hour) and stay on the pitch for the full 90 minutes unless injured....cause you know he can last that long. Xavi/Silva/Iniesta COMBINED are just missing that cutting edge that Fabregas brings to the table. Rather poor group opposition has masked that fact a bit....without Ibrahimovic, Sweden just frustrated the Spanish...there was no real intent from Sweden in the ENTIRE second half. They just sat back and it almost seemed like they pulled a Greece. Fabregas needed time to get into the game inorder to make a difference...instead, he had the life sucked out of him a bit by the Swedes, which is why he should have started. I just don't understand Aragones' team selection....

OH, and if you still want to believe that Torres was PISS Poor then I can;t imagine what you would call David Villa's performance because, other than two instances (volley that was stopped and goal that was scored), he WAS INVISIBLE!!!

newbie, newbie... Calm down...

I never said Torres was "PISS POOR". I said he looked lost. He wasn't playing at his usual level.

Also, I didn't expect him to create chances, never said I did. I expected him to make something out of those 20 passes given to him.

What the hell, i'd think you were joking if it wasn't for Iniesta and Puyol crounching infront of Senna rather than by the side of him, also Iniesta doesn't rest his arm on Senna's leg, while Puyol skips Senna to try to put it on Iniesta's.

look at puyol's hand he's got his finger tips on Iniesta's legs as if not to allow ANY part of his hand to touch Senna; also look at the way Capdevilla is looking at him...with some sort of disgust...wow....that's kind of weird sad...
