watched Into The Wild last night, the Sean Penn adapted and directed movie which was once my blind prediction to win the Oscar :p

I really liked it, its really good, but its not perfect or near that. the trailer really had me waiting for this one abotu a young guy whose free spirit makes him leave everything behind and go to the wilderness of Alaska. Emile Hirsch is the one playing Chris McCandless (the movie is based on his life) and its a great performance. Oscar nominated Hal Holbrook shows up near the end and gives the movie a really nice and sweet touch. Catherine Keener is also worthy of praise playing a hippie Chris finds during his travels.

the movie is great, very good views of the deserts and the rivers and Alaska, but something didnt quite got me, and I think its the way the movie is put together.

the present time of the movie is Chris in Alaska, finally getting there and setting himself in the "Magic Bus" that will house him for this stay there. and then in flashbacks we meet his family and the all the people he encounters in his way to the wild. its usually a good way to tell a story but this time it didnt work for me for some reason, maybe because the Alaska parts were not as big as they should've or something.
or because his stay in Alaska sucked in comparison with what he experienced before, living with the hippies, or with Holbrook, or with the naked europeans. but he had to do it, experience it like he wanted it, I guess.

still, adding the perfect songs by Eddie Veder and Penn's excellent work with the camera make the movie totally worthy and very recommended (Y)(Y)

but no, and I actually have Dazed and Confused twice on DVD. first I bought it on a special edition together with Fast Times At Ridgemont High, and then bought it last year again when it came out as Criterion (Y)(Y)

just curious...

about how many DVD's have you got?

personally, I just can't convince myself to get DVDs for the same reason I didn't buy tapes of my favourite movies -- VCDs made tapes look silly, then came DVDs, and now HDDVDs and Blu-Ray ... and if it didn't make much of a difference, I could understand, but the clarity and quality of picture from HDDVDs and Blu-Ray are just so stunning!

I mean I know it doesn't make too much of a difference for some movies and some TV shows, but for anything action oriented -- Gladiator, Troy, LOTR, The Matrices, Batman Begins -- HD is just awesome! I mean even Lion King (ye, the cartoon with Simba) looks pretty cool when it's been digitally remastered for HD ...

so that's pretty much it: there's no way I can keep up with technology, so I've resisted becoming a collector ...

well, I buy only special/aniversary editions or director's cut, or regular ones with a ton of extras which is what Im interested in. quality is not really a problem IMO since, in my life, Ill end up watching a movie I like more times on cable TV than on DVD anyway :p

The Prestige, liked it a lot, amazing cast, and the plot is very good indeed, good direction too (Y)

Cristian Bale really is a great actor imo, Carlos*man and Caine are obviously fantastic, and even if Scarlett sat still and quiet throughout the entire thing, i'd still think it'd be oscar worthy (H), so..i definitely recommend it :D

as for cable, I'm not too sure how it is in Uruguay, but I can't stand watching movies while I'm in the USA or Canada ... commercials every 5 to 7 minutes, which ensures every movie lasts 3 hours ... it's just too much of a time-waste ... and I haven't got Tivo/PVR at my abode in the States, so that wasn't an option either ...

Im talking HBO/CINEMAX cable so no commercials cause yeah, watching movies with commercials sucks.

and I actually watched The Prestige for the first time a few weeks ago too and really liked it (Y)

Definitely Maybe

Cute

PS: I had no idea that Ryan Reynolds could act in a serious role. Abigail Breslin (little girl from Little Miss Sunshine) is great (Y)
