Well, guess you guys aren't as clueless as I thought. My ignorant perception was that just a very small percentage of Americans know how to drive stick, like 1 in 10 or something like that.

Looks like the Mexican is the only one. But he doesn't even need to know, it's not like lawn mowers have manual transmission.

You guys are stuck in the past. I'm not a bus driver.

I can drive triptonic. That's good enough for me.

Yeah but you must have like a dozen semi.

not getting what you are saying here, i can drive a semi or rig if that is what you are talking about.

never liked an automatic transmission much, they tend to slip more than a manual transmission and the fact you can only downshift an automatic to speed up and not to save brakes costs you more money later.

I've done it a few times, on noth manual and automanic cars, but only when I'm dangerously low on gas or trying to save on gas.

That means that you use your brakes at the wrong times. A more cautious driver would not face that issue.

As far as repairing your own car, unless you know exactly what you are doing it is not worth the risk. So the benefit of a manual transmission, in that regard, is minimal. In addition, a more cautious driver would not have to fix their car as often.

I don't even have a driving licence, let alone a car. But i don't need it anyway at the moment. I pretty much know how to drive since i've driven from Luxembourg to Germany which was like 3 hour trip. There and back. Not on the highway. I remember that i took some xanax earlier, because for some reason i always get anxious when there's lot of traffic, but my tolerance is so high, so it doesn't slow down my reaction time.

Do any of you drive in neutral gear when going downhill? I often do but I notice many don't.

i don't and it really isn't recommended that you do especially if you drive an automatic.

rev matching is important when going downhill and going around off ramps or sharp turns when downshifting or shifting from neutral making sure to match power band to rpm range due to force put on your drive axles which can cause damage to the transmission or snap an axle.

It's supposedly dangerous.

it can be if you do something incredibly stupid like shift into second while coasting at 65 mph or whatever kph that is.

not sure this would make much of a difference on your mpg.

i prefer to downshift and only use my brakes when needed.

i am only cautious when it's raining because people around me are scared of the rain and like to stomp on the brakes or crawl when they see brake lights.

as far as repairing my own car that is no issue, i have been working on cars for years, i can tear a motor or trans down and rebuild/repair with no problems.

i have a heavily modified car, basically a race car so i beat the shit out of it, naturally i would need to work on it more than a normal driver would.

You may be right and I think deep down, I'm doing it so it can psychologically keep me going until I see the next gasoline station.

I'll shift into neutral when I'm approaching a stop, then come to a complete stop, then put the car into first. But everyone does that because you don't want to have to ride the clutch or downshift. You can just pop into neutral without using the clutch at all, putting off an inevitable costly repair much longer.

if you think about it, you burn more gas when the motor is revving and the higher the rpm the more fuel the ecu tells the injectors to dump into the combustion chamber, whether or not you are giving it gas or sitting idle even 800 rpm (idle rpm) still uses fuel to keep the pistons pumping and the motor running.

only way you save gas is if you kill the engine while rolling but you will most likely lose power steering and starting your car uses more fuel than sitting idle at 800 rpm for 5 minutes.

you should never for any reason downshift into first gear, downshift to second then straight to neutral, then to first gear.

you don't have to ride the clutch to brake, most cars can have the brakes applied without the clutch to about 5 mph before the car starts to buck and eventually stalls.

i don't worry about my clutch, sometimes i pull the rpm to 5k rpm and release the clutch but i also have a racing clutch that bites like a gator and i love the smell of a burning clutch just like i love the smell of gasoline.
