wiiiii

1. sounds like you're going; "weeeeeeeee" as in, in a roller coaster ride.

2. or like a 12 yr old kid (as Ruud so aptly put) worryingly excited at peeing in the toilets, "look, its weeeeeeeeeeeee"

:(

Revolution was ace.

no no Luis, say it properly; "Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!" clearly how they wanted us to say it :(. Seriously, not sure about elsewhere, but this is a massive hammerblow for the console's success in the UK, i know a console SHOULD be marked upon its performance etc, but fankly, people wont buy this.

Has to be up their with such stupid names as the Dreamcast and WonderSwan

I appluade Nintendo for stepping out of the norm. The name sounds weird, no doubt, but I think it will catch on in time.

WonderSwan does sound a bit flaky. Dreamcast doesn't sound bad at all to me, though. If any name is stupid than it's Xbox. I mean, could Microsoft had been any more original? It sounds like a 2-year-old came up with it.

Pronounced like "we" (or "whee," I suppose), the name is meant to emphasize that "this console is for everyone," Nintendo said in a flash video which introduced the name change.

"The other systems have an extension of their current names; ours is a new leap to something different," Perrin Kaplan, Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Affairs for Nintendo of America, told me. "A lot of thought went into the name."

"Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak," the company said in its flash presentation of the name. "No confusion. No need to abbreviate.

i just think this is a conceptual nightmare of the first order. It'd be like a 8yr old lad opening an action man box around his mates on his birthday, only to find his mum has actually bought him a barbie, then for the kid to look embarrased around his mates.

Imagine going into a store and asking if they have any wii's in stock...

Seriously, may be fine in the U.S and Japan, but in the UK sales of this system are gonna divebomb.

"can i have a wii please"

Nearly as good as the age-old blockbusters joke;

"can i have a P please Bob" :D

Why? Because of a NAME?

I don't think the name will make a difference to the casual/hardcore gamers in the UK, honestly. If the product is quality and delivers ten fold, and is worth the money, who cares what it's called.

wont effect hardcore gamers one percent. It WILL effect sales from casual gamers, even a change of 1 or 2 % is a massive failure if you think about it.

It only needs 1 or 2% of mothers (that know nothing) who are buying their sons and daughters christmas presents to think, "wow, that cant be a proper console, im not buying that" and its a bad move from Nintendo.

Revolution was good, it wasnt amazing, but it was good. Maybe Wii will catch on, but i dont see it happening any time soon, and THATs the problem mana.

I think it's a good name. They're right about it being easy for anyone to say, it cuts out the problem of translation.

Nintendo Wii.

I think it is definatly catchy. Although Tom is right, the console isn't going to do well in England.

Sorry Tom, but I don't envision that happening at all, especially to a highly reputable and popular company such as Nintendo. And who's to say skeptical parents won't do a little research before buying Nintendo Wii? After all, it is Christmas. You would have to be an irrational idiot to discount a product because of its name; it's like judging a book by its cover.

sounds like a name that'll be succesful in japan but not over here. I for one don't give a sh*t about the name of a console but I can see why a lot of people are angry with the change. The name Revolution was way cooler.

Mana, what im trying to say is that 1 or 2 % of those parents that buy consoles for children wont bother.

The VAST majority will think "ha, thats a big silly, but it isnt a problem", and others might do a bit of research, or like you say, most will just trust the Nintendo brand.

What I'M saying is that if only 1 or 2 % of those people are turned off by the name Wii, then in itself that is quite a loss of money compared with if Nintendo had've left it as Revolution. It just seems to me that Nintendo havent quite thought through the implications.

Mind you i agree with what some have said, its definitely catchy. But imagine a parent who hasnt heard of it before, told a few days before christmas, "mum, i want you to go spend hundreds of pounds on a computer games machine by Nintendo called Wii"

maybe im being harsh, but you see my point.

How long have nintendo been making successful consoles? i think they would know a thing or two about marketing.

Nintendo know what they are doing
