The matches in red are the classics. The matches in green are matches that aren't classics but are close to being so.

Not really related to the league, but it seems that it's confirmed that Alfio Basile will be the coach of the national team again, and now Boca is looking for a new coach, the main candidate seems to be Marcelo Bielsa.

Bielsa :S

I think Boca will win la apertura if Gago stays.

They got Bobadilla from Libertad & Paraguay to replace El Pato

But, Bilos and Insúa left and it seems they didn't get a proper replacement for either one of these players, also Battaglia seems to be missing in the outer space because he isn't even mentioned and that Ledesma isn't even close to fill his place, Diaz(Which means that there may be penalties called against Boca:p) is also gone he wasn't the big deal but it seems they didn't find a proper replacement either, Morel Rodriguez is even worse than Diaz, and evidently they'll let Maidana rot in the bench, and if they decide to use Franzoia as Insúa's replacement i'm seeing Marino on the left and Neri Cardozo rotting in the bench too. But eh they revived from the grave Bocelli(Was an U20 for some reason has been ignored in Boca) and that Trejo, but other than that i don't really see this supposed "youth projection" that Boca was supposed to do this season.:boohoo:

And let's not forget that Bobadilla was kicked from Gimnasia already.:jambo:

Apparently Pompilio must show a project for a new stadium soon, i heard that they are planning to do an unique stadium for both Boca and Atlanta.:o

Speaking of which, Boca will play a friendly the sunday against Cruz Azul,
Gimnasia LP will play a friendly cup match against Racing Club.
Independiente would play a training friendly against Defensa y Justicia the friday.

Ok, so I want to start watchin the Argentine league more. But I really dont have a team to follow. I dont want to just pick River or Boca cuz that would be too easy and just plain and simply be glory-hunting.

So I would like to kno what are the teams like? It might be too much to ask for a description of every club, but I guess someone could do it for the thread as well to break down how the teams are going to be like (latest signings, current srats, potential stars, etc). If not then waht teams would be good for a first team argentine league follower? Im kinda thinking about Lanus, but im not sure. Whats Lanus like?

thanks in advance. :)

Well here's some things about Lanús. Located in the city of Lanús, at the south of the city of Buenos Aires, is the most popular team between the citizens of it's home city, and also one of the most popular teams in the south of Buenos Aires.
Regarding football, through most of their history in professional football they have been hanging around promotion and relegation between the 1st the 2nd and the 3rd division, however on the first half of the 90's this changed, since they have stayed in the 1st division for 13 years now, Lanús has been champion 7 times in Argentina but never in the first division(6 from their titles are 2nd division championships and 1 a 3rd division championship) however they have won an international cup, Copa Conmebol '96(Southamerican version of the UEFA Cup, no longer played), the best they got in the first divison was a 2nd position(which they repeated in the last Clausura), in the last 15 years more than once Lanús looked like a promising team but crumbled in the half of the way or near the ending, there's a lot of hope in the present for them to do a good campaign this coming season, their coach, Ramon Cabrero, seems to know what he's doing and is giving space to the youngesters to play, it seems they have been doing a good work with their youth teams, most of the players are between 20 and 22 years old, one of these is Rodrigo Archubi who took part in the U20 team of Argentina in the U20 world cup last year, however they got a very experienced keeper like Carlos Bossio.
I didn't hear anything about singings they have done, the only thing i heard is that their star defender, Leandro Gioda who is 21 years old, signed with Independiente.
You that support Toluca both Rodrigo Diaz and Román Diaz were players of Lanús.

About Independiente, the team looks promising wouldn't be a surprise to see us winning it this year, more likely if we don't win it this year with the singings they made, we'll never win again.:o

Newell's Old Boys, hmm not sure there they lost Ortega and Belluschi got to see if they pull out anything interesting.

River didn't do any overhelming sign other than Ortega, but once they get around the injured players they may end up having an interesting squad, with the kinds of Ortega, Belluschi and Figueroa in front.

My candidates are, Independiente, River Plate, Vélez Sarsfield, San Lorenzo, Lanús, in that order. Should be interesting to see Verón back at Estudiantes. :o

I think Independiente, River and Estudiantes are candidates...

Boca will have to play better if they want the Tri... :jambo:

Senior Squad
Caceres is no longer staying with River and is expected to join Monterrey of Mexico shortly.

I hope this means we sign Ronald Raldes. We can get him for a good price and he's a very good defender. (Y) EDIT: Just read now that his contract expired with Central, and they didn't renew the loan.

Also, Bielsa has said "no" to the possibility of coaching Boca. :jambo:

My predicted River squad for the opening of the Apertura:

-------------------------Lux----------------------------
--Ferrari------Tuzzio------Lussenhoff-----Dominguez------
--------------------------Domingo-----------------------
-Belluschi----------------------------------------Zapata-
----------------------Gallardo---------------------------
------------Ortega--------------Farias/Higuain-----------

Ahumada would normally play in Domingo's place, but he is out for a month.

Yes, i think you are right...

But i think Farias will be 100% for the first match...he looked good against libertad...

Forget about Ronald Raldes unless Central signs Ivan Hurtado. :jambo:

I think that Rosario Central has the potential of doing a good championship.
Here is my prediction on the formation:

------------Juan Ojeda------------
Moreira----Raldes---Fassi---Rivarola
------------Calgaro-----------------
Coudet------------------Kily Gonzalez
-----------Pablo Vitti--------------
------Wanchope-----Marco Ruben---

Thanks for the info. (Y) A question tho, what team will Rengo Diaz be playing for? :$ Aside from Bruno Marioni right now, theres no other Argentine player I admire as much, so I might support whatever team hes on. The way i see it... i gotta choose a team somehow. Rengo

Another thing, is Lavolpe really a candidate for the Boca Jrs job?

El Diablo Rojo

Starting XI
Rodrigo Diaz signed with Independiente yesterday apparently. Apparently that was the "Plan B" in case they couldn't get Pisculichi.

Some informal friendlies scores, Independiente, with Gioda on the starting 11, won 2-0 over Defensa y Justicia, San Lorenzo won 2-0 over Platense, Lanús lost 2-1 with Chacarita.

Copa Sancor, it's a friendly cup being held in Rafaela where 2 teams of the first division are playing, Nueva Chicago and Rosario Central, the host being Atlético Rafaela, 2nd division club of Argentina, and U. Catolica, the chilean club, is the 4th team playing. In the first match Rosario Central won 3-2 over Nueva Chicago, Wanchope played most of the match but didn't score any goal, in Nueva Chicago near the ending Fischer came in and scored a goal, Nueva Chicago was close to tie it, Central shown some problems at defending on the set-pieces. U. Catolica won 1-0 over Atlético Rafaela, in the final match Rosario Central won 4-2 over U. Catolica and once again Wanchope didn't score any goal. in the third place match Atlético Rafaela wiped the floor with Nueva Chicago in a 5-1 victory for the home team. All the 4 matches were played at Atlético Rafaela's stadium, for those who don't know it would look like a "mini-bombonera".

Copa 435(?). Boca tied 2-2 with Cruz Azul in Mexico, and then Boca won 4-2 on penalties, Schellotto scored the 2 goals in the 90 minutes.

Copa Amistad. Gimnasia LP won 2-0 over Racing Club. Was to be expected.

Yes it seems that Lavolpe will be the new coach of of Boca, i wonder if he'll be ready to face managing a team like Boca. And is it Lavolpe or La Volpe?

I didn't hear anything about River playing friendlies. Also wouldn't they give a chance to Toranzo to play as the CM?

He didn`t score because he didn`t play :funny: Central played with his B team. Lot of kids.

Oh i thought he played in that match too. However for what i've seen those youth players made a very good work, Rosario Central looked like a very offensive team on these matches.

Confirmed Rodrigo Diaz signed with Independiente.

Tallreres RE turned 100 years old on June 1st, so to celebrate that they will host a friendly match against Independiente this thursday, which will be the first(and maybe only) pre-season friendly of Independiente shown live in TV.

River Plate will play friendly against Independiente Rivadavia(club of the 3rd division of Argentina) the sunday.

After all Lavolpe rejected the offer for coaching Boca, even though he had Maradona's approval, it seems that Basile would stay until December with Boca then whoever replaces him takes the place, a new candidate to replace him may be Carlos Ischia.

First Time Poster..

Hello all,

This is my first post into this forum.

I did not start really following soccer until the World Cup 2002 and since then I have had a steadily rising interest which is devolping into a passion. I am still learning about the sport so please forgive my ocassional ignorance.

I currently live in Phoenix, Arizona. In March of next year I will be moving to Buenos Aires for a year(hopefully longer) to study spanish and to experience living in a different country since it is something I have always wanted to do.

I have been reading about the history of soccer in Buenos Aires and the city in general. In looking for a team to root for I read about the history of the majority of the clubs in Argentina and I didnt want to jump on the River/Boca bandwagon.
When I began reading about the history of San Lorenzo, I knew I had found my team.

Im very excited to be following my first Apertura in Argentine soccer.
I would love to ask you all for assistance with finding websites that you all consider to be the best sources of information on the upcoming season, as well as the clubs and players as I look to become more familiar with Primera División, and Argentine soccer in general.

Any and all information you can provide to me will be accepted and very much appreciated(especially any information about San Lorenzo and your thoughts/predictions on how they will do this year).

Thank you all in advance for any responses and I look forward to enjoying the upcoming season with you.

C.T.
