Rancid, NOFX, Less than Jake, and Mest are in my CD player right now. Also I'm dissappointed that most people don't know the difference between punk (NOFX), pop-punk (Mest/Blink), and ska (Reel Big Fish).

A bit late...but I would like re-emphasis this with the surfacing of this thread and reading a few of the above comments.

Did you ever listen to the Vacant Andy's? That was the guy from Dashboards old punk band in Florida.

Ever heard Piebald, Promise Ring, Boy Sets Fire, those types of bands?

I listen to a bit of emo and indie:

- Get Up Kids
- Thursday
- Saves The Day
- At The Drive-In (Best Band Ever)

etc . . .

So are you into hardcore as well? I used to be big into the scene for many years and watch alot of these bands come up. It's very strange to see them on MTV nowadays. I remember seeing the Get Up Kids in Detroit and nobody knew who they were.

Boy Sets Fire is just politically-motivated rock. Not punk at all in my opinion.

They certainly started in the punk scene.. I can even remember it, my band almost did a split 7" with them.

The thing with punk though is this.. It's so fragmented these days. The Green Days and Offsprings are garbage, and I don't consider that punk at all. If you want the essence of punk, it's very political but has taken many shapes now.

You've got indie/emo, hardcore, crust punk, metal/hardcore, ska, oi.. it's all one big family when you peel aprt the layers.

punk is divided into a lot of sub-genres just like any other styles of music. I don't see what's wrong with that.

Yeah, and if you want to take it like that. All genres of music are one big family because they all containt elements of old jazz. :|

Here's what I'm going to say to you sir. **** you.

Ramones, Op Ivy, Rancid, NOFX, Buzzcocks, Bad Religion. I've never heard these bands on the radio or tv with the exception of the new Rancid video and the very odd buzzcocks song in some car commercial. None of these bands are in it for the money (or were) and I'd thank you to shut your mouth about Joey Ramone. Last thing, none of these bands signed to a major label, NOFX started their own to avoid that.

Rancid and Bad Religion signed for major labels actually ;)

and I have to add that the Buzzcocks rule :D

Okay, you asked for it..

The Offspring - Major Label MTV
The Ramones - Major Label MTV
Rancid - MTV
Bad Religion - Major Label MTV
Green Day - Major Label MTV
Goldfinger - MTV
mxpx - MTV
Sex pistols - MTV
NOFX - I like em, they make me laugh.

You must not have been around in say.. 1996-7 when many of these bands blew up. If youhave never heard them on the radio, then you aren't listening.

Give me old bad Religion and NOFX anytime..

Rancid = Epitaph. NOT a major label

Bad Religion is mainstream? Ok, right.

The Ramones are the reason why you are able to listen to punk right now, there's no taking anything away from them.

I won't/can't defent any other band and never did.

You know what? Who gives a f-ck if the band is in it for the money. If it f-cking sounds good, who cares? Good for them. Capitalism at its finest. Entrepeneurs if you will--making a business out of their skill.

Epitaph is a major label. You can call them independent, but the amount of money they pull in is quite high. They have huge distribution, high prices, and big exposure. Independent to me is still the guy with the record label in his house.

Bad Religion not mainstream? Maybe you forget a funny song called "21st Century Digital Boy...." Boy, that was a winner.

The Ramones get credit for helping shape what punk is today sure.. But I got into punk from bands like Minor Threat, Agnostic Front, Black Flag, Government Issue, Youth of Today, Bad Religion, etc. etc.

I don't. But punk was never about making money... Some say punk is a lifestyle, not just a music trend. But most people don't get that.

I'm more of the "I'll go toe to toe with you on the music, but I just can't live the lifestyle"

The Ramones are the reason why those bands existed.

Not into punk all that much, but let me just say that true punk is very rare today. Yeah, Rancid and NOFX are up there, but they're declining (no pun intended) as well.

The Living End is a very solid band atm.

oh and btw, if you didn't do so yet, download NOFX's 18 min. song, The Decline:rockman: :rockman:

ShiftyPowers

hell yeah dude, The Decline is amazing, but definitely something to download. I've seen it in stores and been like "who would pay for 18 minutes of music?"

Living End - Monday is a great song. In fact I might go so far as to say that the guitar solo is the equivalent of the bass solo on Maxwell Murder.

Yup. You mention Rancid but I consider them SKA, if I'm honest. Fair enough, they're punk-ish but it's been bloody ages since a really good punk band came along and knocked my socks off.

As for political punk, despite Britain being a political hotbed of crap, we produce nowt but indie stuff. Good indie stuff, mind.

Rancid is Ska? Reading many of these posts, I have realized that most of you don't actually know what punk is.

Crass was good British political punk.
