Sublime (All recognition is not enough for one of the best bands ever)
It's amazing, but I came in here precisely to mention Sublime. They were putting out brilliant and innovative art at a time when you had to wear flannel to be taken seriously. I didn't even hear them once on the radio until after Brad died.
Now in regards to Emo, I initially never had a problem with it.... back when it might as well have been called "preppie punk". Back when you had your bands like Saves the Day and then later on something like the Starting Line. But then emo just completely got hijacked by a fringe group which I like to refer to as the goth/loser faction. Today you have to be dressed in all black with gigantic ear discs to be taken seriously, even Green Day and Goldfinger are doing it!!!!! Emo sometimes is ok, there's a good portion of the music that I enjoy, but take that portion and multiply it by 100 and that's how much of it I dispise. I hate goth/loser people and I don't want to hear them bitch about being weird.
Goldfinger is my nominee to underrated bands. Without Goldfinger there is no Good Charlotte/Simple Plan/Mest/etc and subsequently there is no emo boom today (which I think capitalized on pop punk's popularity and then took it in a new, ****tier direction). Goldfinger was fantastic in their first two albums, the self titled one and Hang Ups. And they never had a whiff of a hit, at best "Superman" was on the first Tony Hawk game and "Here in your bedroom" was the breakout, but they got no where near the pub they should have.
Also, Less than Jake. Haven't gotten anywhere near the respect they deserve from the mainstream.
Good talk though guys, rock is just terrible these days, I've drifted almost 100% into hip-hop and even something I would have gasped in horror at 5 years ago... pop.
