why is everyone in Portugal obsessed with GTI models and tuning.

I love sports cars, but only the ones that are REALLY built to be sports cars.

anyway if you really want one of those, you can just go to Germany or Italy for a few days and pick up a used one and bring it. Even if you have to pay the tax to get it legal in Portugal, it is much much cheaper than buying here.

Oh and the tax is also calculated based on the engine size, so if you want a sports car the ideal is to get a 2000 one at most with loads of horsepower rather than a 3000 and something one with less horsepower.

That's why I'm thinking atm of going to pickup a Mazda Rx-8 as soon as I can. It has a special kind of engine and that makes the engine size be only 1300, therefore the tax to pay is very reduced.

Me a Volkswagen fan :ewan:

I currently drive a 2003 VW Polo. It's my first car, and a nice one it is to begin with.

But there's this dream, I wish to fulfill one day... Golf GTI. Too bad that here in Portugal it costs up to 45K €, because of the f'n IA (vehicle tax) and IVA. It's base price is 23K, so see how much taxes are heavy when buying a brand new car.

My friend, I don't understand the fascination we have in this country for the VW group. From Audis to the VWs themselves, people tend to perceive them as better cars just because they're overpriced and german. You want a good German car? Try a BMW or a Porsche.
VWs aren't the safest cars around, they are hardly interesting design-wise, the interiors are dull and the fringgin' cost TOO DAMN MUCH!

I don't want to change your opinion - one likes what one likes - but I can tell you this much: the only reason VWs (and your car in particular) cost more than their competition is not because they use better solutions, but simply more expensive ones.

I have to agree here. It turns my stomach to see those Fiat Uno's with double exhaust pipes being loud as hell (although only cruising at a top speed of 80Km/h).

--------------------------

I'm actually thinking about getting a brand new sports car. I already chose it, but the thing is I only buy stuff with the money I raised from my own sweat and tears. My parents don't give me money nor would I accept it. Unlike most people I know, I'd never gloat about the brand new BMW 320i my dad just bought me, but that's just the way it is around here...

Agreed. It's f*cking suicide to put for instance a 200 HP engine on a Citroen Saxo or something. If anything goes wrong you know you're not gonna make it out of it alive.

That car is legendary. But doesn't that kinda wears out the engine too fast ? I mean, I was about to buy a Golf GT which has a 1400 engine with 170 HP. But I was then warned about the troubleshoot that would possibly occur some years later because of its small engine, considering the Hp, seems it's pushing it too much. That's why I chose an Audi A3, plus I think the fuel consumption/performance of TDI engines is still the best.

nah it's a different type of engine.

I wish it had the fuel consumption of a 1300 though :p

I should be getting one in two years tops, those back doors give me a hard-on

if gas doesn't go over 2€/liter that is. If that's the case I'll be taking the bus :D

Lmao. Yeah, me too. :( You gotta love americans complaining about the gas price though, paying half of what we pay for it.

(awaiting for flaming of some american dude that ocasionaly passes by this thread and sees this)

Well, count me as that American.

Anyway, I have a story from when I visited Spain with my grade 12 Spanish class a few years ago. We were on our way to Toledo, and we passed a Galp station, and one of my friends noticed the gas prices. She said "Wow, 83 cents a gallon!" I forgot to mention to her that it was 83 cents a litre, which obviously would have made it more xpensive when compared to what it cost to fill our cars at the time (about $1.50 to $1.75 a gallon, depending on the time of year). It also didn't help her cause that she was just about the most gullible and forgetul person in our class (later on that same trip, she lost her eyeglasses).

The VW "obcession" is something that runs in my family, since my grand-parents lived in Germany in the late-70's to the early 80's. When they were there, they bought two cars. Both VW. And it has passed to me, I guess...

===

It's not really for tuning that I'd love to buy a Golf GTI one day. Really not. People here in Portugal that actually have their cars tuned up, tend to go over the edge! Like Fiat Unos and Puntos coloured to almost blind us, ailerons, with awful psy-trance on the max volume of their stereo systems, loud exhaust pipes, and only go 100km/h...

I just LOVE that car. It has that 'something' that caught my attention. I've been inside one in a VW stand-show a while ago, and it felt... WOW. I can't explain it. I think I'll ask for a test-drive, one of these days :p

===

I've already thought about going to Germany and get a used car. Even with the import taxes, it actually does come out MUCH cheaper than buying one here. Getting a Portuguese licence plate is around 1000-1500 euros, I think. I don't know how much is the rest of the costs.

But I'm selling my car if the gas price climbs much more. Here in Beja you really need a car to go somewhere, because there are NO public transportations. But since I'm moving back to Lisbon for college...

Having a car is becoming too luxurious like it was when they first appeared! Only the rich ones can really afford to keep a car without deeply feeling it on their monthly budgets.

So true, which makes it even more shocking whenever I see a Hummer or Escalade on the road. I swear I spend maybe $50 on gas a month with my 99' Honda Civic. Not just because it's great on gas, but because I barely drive it these days... I only live about 20 minutes from work so I just ride my mountain bike, then I just take one of the company vehicles from there.

I was actually thinking about getting a Vespa for just getting around town, but the insurance to drive one of those is a lot here...Not to mention I could only actually ride it for like 4-5 months due to our climate here.

Yeah, do the test-drive! Nothing like trying things out yourself.
Btw, test-drive a couple other cars from the same price slot, just to see if you keep the same opinion afterwards. ;)

I got a friend that bought a Smart in Germany and imported it to Portugal. He did it through a friend of his that has a Stand, though. It was a quick operation and he saved money.

Yay, I finally got RTPi in my apt. Now I can finally follow our league. From what I've heard, RTPi has one live game on Saturday and a delayed game on Sunday.

I forgot to mention. In Germany, only the rich and the upper-middle class buy brand new cars. And since almost everyone from those social status have garages, the cars are usually in very good state. And they keep buying new cars every year or every two years.

So, the middle class people buy the used cars from the higher social status, and they always have from 5000-10000km (sometimes a bit more, but not higher than 25000-30000 km), which is almost as a new one! That's why you see many Mercedes, BMW's, VW's, Opel's, etc, in very good shape in the German streets.

The only problem could be the snowy roads. Not only the snow, but also the sault that is thrown to help clear the roads, tend to "corroer" the lower part of the car. But people there always take very good care of their cars, so that isn't always a problem.

Yeah, I knew about the NT games. I'm definately looking forward to that. I also want to see some under 21 games to see if we have any hope for the future.

anyone watching Braga - Betis?

Braga is playing Betis off the park and Joao Pinto scored one of his best goals ever and is in superform.

nah man, not on RTPi :(

I noticed some really nice touches from JVP against Sporting, kinda reminded me of the old JVP. Let's hope he has a great season.

I'm gonna have to search hard for these Braga-Betis vids after. Hopefully someone puts them up on youtube
