Everybody here knows I'm an admirer of Scolari's work. To me, he's withouth a doubt one of the best coaches in the world in motivating his players, making his teams work very hard, creating a work group that's very united and that has a winning mentality. But the truth is that he's always had some serious flaws in judging players abilities and choosing the best ones, something that is worsened by his incredible stuberness. Portugal's NT call up for the next two decisive games against Luxembrourg and Russia is the most unbelievable example of this. I don't know whether I should laugh or cry...
"Guarda-redes:
Quim (Benfica) e Ricardo (Sporting);
Defesas:
Alex (Benfica), Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea), Jorge Andrade (D. Corunha), Paulo Ferreira (Chelsea), Caneira (Valência), Nuno Valente (F.C. Porto) e Fernando Meira (Valência);
Médios:
Petit (Benfica), Figo (Inter de Milão), João Moutinho (Sporting), Boa Morte (Fulham), Simão (Benfica), Costinha (D. Moscovo), Deco (Barcelona) e Maniche (D. Moscovo);
Avançados:
Cristano Ronaldo (Manchester United), Hélder Postiga (F.C. Porto) e Pauleta (PSG)"
Where will I start?
Ricardo??? Yeah, he's been craptastic and Scolari still calls him, which is a clear message of "the place is yours, no matter how crappy you play and how many atrocious blunders you make, so you don't have to worry".
Quim? Sub at Benfica.
Nuno Valente? Training at Porto B. Although I do understand this option, as Scolari is showing he's with the player for his decision to keep playing in the NT and that he has confidence in him. One thing also nobody cna deny is that Scolari is a coach that is a true friend and defender of his players.
Costinha??? Maniche??? Yeah, I bet Scolari has seen all their games in Russia and from what I knwo, they've been spectacular, helping Dinamo get defeat after defeat.
It's really sad to see what it's so obvious in this call up: Scolari doesn't call the players who are the best and in better form, but those which he likes and has confidence in, regardless of anything else. I still have confidence in him, because of the reasons I mentioned above and because he's been doing an excellent job, both in the Euro and in the WC qualifying.
I have faith we will do well at the WC but it seriously bothers and sadens me to see that our national coach isn't capable of choosing the players that most deserve to represent our country and that would be the better options. If he did that, our NT would benefit a lot and along with his qualities as a coach (which I think nobody can deny), we would have an even much stronger squad, with more solid aspirations of becoming World Champions.
