I hadn't seen Arsenal play in since ages. I was very impressed with them. Is that the normal Arsenal starting defense now? How well rated is Senderos (sp?)?

Nope.

It's normally Lauren-Toure-Senderos/Campbell-Cole.

The two stand-in fullbacks are Eboue (R) and Clichy (L).

Lauren, Cole, Clichy are injured and Campbell is ****ed in the head.

Therefore we had Eboue playing on the left (I think) and Flamini (DM) on the right.

We'll probably have both Cole and Clichy back for the second leg.

It was Eboue - Toure - Senderos - Flamini

Flamini is DM, Eboue is a natural DR but it was only his 4th professional start. The oldest one was Toure (24).

A. Cole played 68 min in a friendly against Barnet today so he will probably be ready for the 2nd leg.

And people in here keep talking about Reyes being a cheat but no one mentions Cicinho's pathetic acting when he got owned by Flamini or Ramos' slap across Eboue's face.

Which play are talking about in terms of Cicinhos acting??

On the Ramos issue if you watch it again its Eboue who is pushing/holding Ramos down for whatever reason and Ramos reacted by ALMOST slapping him ( looks like it missed him by an inch ). I cant really blame Ramos but at the same time he should have just stayed calm.

When Flamini tackled him right outside the penalty box around the 37th minute. Flamini got all ball and he started acting like he was in pain after he heard the crowd reaction.

newbie original

We apologize for keeping the yellow too long
Yellow Card
Zidane looked pretty tired and don' t know why Robinho was taken off..should' ve been Ronaldo. If your domestic form keeps up, you guys can score 3 at Highbury.

funny part is after a minute of rolling around, he came to the side of the pitch, fake limped and signalled to the ref to come back on. when the ref didnt waive him back on, he acted all pissed and everything. idiot

We all know that is just not the way it works Toon. Its up to him to win them over.

donavan929....dont be stupid mate, Reyes was off the field and then crawled back on to it to try to stop the game. The linesman should have dragged him back off and the ref should have give him a red card for what he did. Personally i would have kicked the slimey little c.u.n.t until he was curled up bleeding against the adboards.

Dont try to defend cheating it just shows that you have no class mate
as classy as your club's pitch condition mate (C)

Maybe you lot should give those old tricks a try. They might actually get you past the quarterfinals ;)

man what are you smoking? there is absolutely no way that should have been a penalty. lehmann already won the ball and beckham tripped over him. theres a reason they didnt protest, cuz they themselves even knew it wasnt supposed to be a penalty.

Are you insane. I saw the game 6+ hours ago now, and I still recall Lehmann winning the ball, and then extending his arm upwards into Beckham's feet, which were by then nearly past him. If you dont think Jens Lehmann knows every little trick in the book, I advise you to take a gander

he may be a bastard, but hes still a funny one

Everyone disagreed when I said Arsenal could beat Madrid physically. How strong Woodgate is, ect. Woodgate lasted all of 15 minutes, every fan of the english game knows what a joke he is.

It was funny to watch too because it's been so long since we could manhandle anyone, we're the physically weakest team in the Premiership.

Keown's coaching is showing. Flamini really enjoyed flying in, you could see it, he was playing with alot of joy.

If were gonna call all missed penalties and bad decisions. Why not bring that offside they called on Henry when Fab lobbed the ball from far away??? It seems as if Henrys acceleration is SO goddamn fast that he appears to be offside. I have seen this more than about 6 times this season alone. :kader:

Lehmann did seem to take out Beckham, but it shouldn't have been a penalty, because I don't think he could have scored, even if he'd remained on his feet. I think he'd hit the ball too far away to catch it. Essentially what I'm saying is that when Lehmann brought down Beckham, the scoring chance had already passed, thus no penalty was warranted. If that's how the ref saw it, then I'd say that's good refereeing, using some judgement.

That probably makes no sense to anyone but me.

I thought about that, too, but the fact remains that in a situation where the goalkeeper obstructs or hinders a player for the sake of brining them down, even if the ball is seemingly beyond being brought back, a pen is generally called. I remember Given brought down duff very similarly last year, and the ball was just as uncontrolled in that situation. The bottom line is that in both cases the keeper should be intellegent enough to let the play go since they had already won the ball

They had what were two decent shouts for a penalty turned down. I hardly think that comes anywhere near to an offside call. Then again, its Madrid's fault for being too heartless to even make a big deal of either non call. Credit to Cicinho, though. He got knocked down by Reyes, but rather than writhe on the floor like a bitch looking for the whistle, he got back up, looked back at the ref, and continued on. That kind of attitude is definately needed on a wider scale in the game today

Eh, It was a forwards tackle. There wasen't enough pressure behind it to merit going down, and if anything that ref was hard on Arsenal. See my Zidane going down like Player B comment, because it's true.

From RealMadrid.com:
"The atmosphere of the Champions League filled the Bernabéu with the visit of a new rival to Spanish territory, Arsenal. With 400 accredited media representatives at the game, and the English with an ultra defensive system"

(H) Ultra defensive my ass, they'd die watching Bolton then.

Bobby, ultra defensive by Madrid standards means very little. Note: look at their defense.

Tommy Smyth was saying during the match how sad it is that the former Real Madrid teams whose defenses have formed part of the backbone of the last dynastic club. I just wonder how many embarrassing days like this that their club can stand before Perez decides that, just maybe, being a great club is more imporatant than being a rich one.

You're right, I just think it's good for referees to use judgement and sometimes let things go, that if the rules were followed to the letter of the law, would be fouls/penalties/etc., if the situation warrants it. One of the worst things in football, for me, is when a penalty kick is "earned" when a forward dribbles the ball 15 yards ahead of himself out of bounds and then conveniently runs into the diving goalkeeper and goes down, and the ref calls it, because the rulebook says he has to. I think, in any sport, it's best for the official to apply the rules to each situation individually, rather than trying to follow them as if they are set in stone. When I refereed, I found using a little judgement and flexibility went a long way towards making it a much better game for everyone involved.

Give the time he got tackled by Flamini a second look. His attitude wasn't so great then, he definitely put on a little bit of a show. ;)
