MLS Thread 2007

Lifted from the MLS Underground blog:

"The season ticket sales at Toronto FC have already exceeded that of any other MLS franchise. With the total season tickets purchased for 2007 now above 12,000, their has now been a cap set on the total number of tickets to be sold for the year. MLSU has learned that cap will be somewhere between 13,000 and 13,500. In all likelihood, Toronto will sell all of its year long packages by the end of February."

All I can say is "wow", that crushes the Toronto Raptors season ticket sales... I don't care what anyone says, TFC is already a success and they haven't even hit the field officially yet. MLS has to start thinking about expanding to Montreal too, afterall that's arguably Canada's main soccer city based on the popularity of the Impact.

Things are looking up for MLS

I agree, except that Toronto ACTUALLY has a **** load of soccer fans while when the Raps came people were just becoming interested in it through the hype. ((And the Raptors have proven to have a solid fan base and are extremely popular in toronto, even if our history is kinda ****))

From MLS Underground blog:

EXCLUSIVE: Red Bulls Considering Zidane Swoop

The Zinedane Zidane to Major League Soccer madness continues to develop.

A MLSU source (let's just call it a friend of a friend) has said that the New York Red Bulls are considering making an offer to Zizou.

If Red Bull does decide to go after the French star, the source said that the club is willing to make a "big offer" for him and if it came down to a bidding war, would outbid all interested parties.

No update yet on the Chicago Fire's interest in Zidane.

Stay tuned...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a rumour that seems to refuse to die.. I thought Zidane made it clear that he was officially retired and didn't want to play again when Chicago made the initial offer? Yet the rumours still surface, I'm wondering if Zidane's first refusal was his way of holding out until a Beckham-like offer came along?

If the Red Bulls get another DP, they're going to have trouble getting under the salary cap. Might be forced to offload Dema Kovalenko. I wouldn't mind Chicago taking him in exchange for our 4th-round pick in the 2012 Supplemental Draft, or something like that.

agreed, toronto should be able to support the team with the immigrant and expat communities there. heck, i'd go see a couple of games in TO if i was still living in windsor. the atmosphere in the stadium should be tight, especially when the galaxy, united, and red bulls roll through. do they allow flares at mls games?:boohoo: probably not

Nice work, Bobby. That doesn't even take into account the U-20 World Cup.

In other news:

A more likely blockbuster announcement from MLS is the jersey sponsorship for David Beckham's Los Angeles Galaxy. Two sources have confirmed that the bidding is down to Citibank and Herbalife (and, interestingly, not Beckham sponsor adidas). The Citibank offer to have its name across the front of Galaxy shirt, the sources said, is a monster: five years, $49 million. A decision is expected any day.

HOLY CRAP, that's a s*it load of money for a sponsorship deal :O

As for the schedule problems, with the amount of international competitions that exist now it is hard for the MLS do avoid such scheduling conflics UNLESS they change their schedule to a fall-spring season, unfortunately for them, they don't yet have the infrastructure and they would have to compete against the NFL, NBA and NHL nationally so I don't know how smart of a move that would be.

You don't need to go Fall-Spring.

You can do two stages, take off a month in the middle. Just start in March instead of April. In this case that month would be June.

And that is a ****load of money.

good point, most places are too hot to play in during the summer anyways that's why the stadiums are always so empty midseason, people don't want to sit in 100 degree weather and be burned alive.

that's a lot of money indeed, especially whn you consider this is the humble MLS..

is it me, or at this rate will the Galaxy become the most hated team in MLS?

Robbie Rogers and Heerenveen have agreed on a mutual termination of his contract. It was initiated by Rogers, who wants to find a team in MLS. Good news for MLS fans. Rogers didn't see any action for Heerenveen's first team, but he's only 19 and he's played well for the US U-20's.

Toronto FC just reached 13,000 season tickets. :D

Maple Leaf Co is pretty much blown away by this (theyll end the cap at 13,500). Wow, and people doubted Toronto would be a good MLS choice (H)

(now the excuse from soccer haters here is that atleast 5000 of those are cause of the "David Beckham trade". :nape: . But fact that TFC beat out the Raptor's 8000 and were 500 shy of the Blue Jay's record BEFORE Beckham was introduced says otherwise.

Also, wasnt Michael Jordan in the NBA at the time of the Raptor's first season? The man was the biggest sports star alive at the time...........no excuses.

That's just awesome.. and to think there really hasn't been that much hype outside of soccer sources. I think once a TV deal gets finalized and they start putting the commercials out there it will go right over the top
